Want to learn about networking.

I've realized that I need to learn more about networking as the company I work for is growing and the network (which I handle) is getting more complex.

It used to be straight forward with just a file server, but then came a webserver, Citrix server and ftp server. I want to get a book that isn't going to be too lengthy but yet covers most of what I'll need to know.

My main concern now is to make sure that local services aren't accessible since we now have external services running on different servers on our LAN. Also, to make sure that whatever I setup now won't be a hassle to change later as we add more stuff and make changes.

What do you consider to long?

The only way you are going to understand the proper way to keep your network secure is to learn the fundamentals of networking, followed by good security practices.

You will be looking at reading at least two books.

I would recommend picking up a CCNA self study guide and that will get you started on the network portion of the equation. Then after that I would pick up a good security book something new not used, because it is always changing.

I know a couple good textbooks but it seems you want a higher level approach then to learn what actually happens at the packet level, hardware level, etc?
