Hi, i have a P3-980, 256mb ram, radeon 9100 128mb, Cable connection.

when i display some websites that contain a lot of pictures(.jpg, .gif, .bmp), and most of the picture is more than 500kb each(around 10 per page)

when i scroll down using the mouse and pulling the scroll bar on the right hand side, i can see some lag. when i more back and forth, it seems not responding as quick as i move. I want to know is it my videocard slowing down, or my cpu slowing down.?

displaying text is fine. When i play games like CS(haven't play any others), i can get more than 30fps anywhere. and my 3dmark01 score is 6400.

so what is slowing down my viewing?

I`d say the processor/memory.
All browsers use the system processor to render the webpage, and a combination of a slower processor, and lack of memory for the browser, background apps and website information doesnt help either.

by the way, my desktop resolution is 1152*864@32bit 75hz refresh rate

It might go a little faster if you lower the res. To prehaps 1024x768.

Probably the CPU + SDR combo. Hit CTRL+ALT+DEL, then T, and check under the Performance tab for the Peak Commit charge. If it's more than 256MB (divide it by 1024), then it's simply a case of you running out of RAM. If not, then it's probably your CPU. What browser are you using? Did you try another? Maybe try 16-bit color depth? Disable smooth scrolling?

But 10 x 500kB = 5MB seems like a lot to scroll on one web page, period.

Pete, i ctrl alt del, i see i have 298mb beside peak...

so is it my ram problem? i am sure people out there only has 256 or even less... if i upgrade it to 384 or 512, will i get any better?

i only use Internet Explorer version, 6.0.2800
sometimes i need to to photoshop too.

More memory will help. I have a SDR system, and i have 768mb of memory. And i dont have the same problems.
If i was you, i`d disable the fancy desktop features, lower colour depth to 16bit, and save up for a new cpu/mobo/mem.

Yes, it seems you are using more memory than you physically have, so your CPU has to hit the page file on the hard drive, which is much slower than RAM. I'd guess an extra 128 or 256MB stick would do you good, but I can't guarantee that'll solve your problem. If you want to be sure it's lack of memory holding you back, reboot the PC, check peak memory usage, then open your web browser to a page with those huge files. If it's slow/choppy, check peak memory usage again; if it's over 256MB, then odds are lack of RAM is the culprit

I think either BestBuy or CompUSA or CircuitCity is selling one for $10 after rebates this week.
