Let's do a test:

Two students, Tom and Jack are doing a test. Professor Jhon has 16 playing cards, they are:

Hearts : A, Q, 4
spades : J, 8, 4, 2, 7, 3
Clubs : K, Q, 5, 4, 6
Dimonds: A, 5

Tom and Jhon know all these 16 playing cards. Professor Jhon picks up one card from these 16 cards, and tells the card number to Tom, then he tells the card suit to Jack. Then professor Jhon asks Tom and Jack: do you know what card is it?

Then you hear the dialog between Tom and Jack:

Tom: "I don't know"
Jack: "I know you don't know"
Tom: "I know it now"
Jack: "hmmm, I know it too"

So, based on the dialog above, can you find out which card is it?

:)

4 of spades.

Since 4 shows up in Hearts, Spades and Clubs, You would expect Tom to say I don't know. If it was a card that only showed up once like J,8,2,7,3 he would know without needing to know the suit.

I'm guessing spades because I'm out of time to think about it. Have to work now. But spades seems logical since 4 is the only choice there that shows up multiple times. Wait, if it was hearts or Clubs... oh well, 4 of Spades is my guess.

here's the way i thought about it:

Hearts : A, Q, 4
spades : J, 8, 4, 2, 7, 3
Clubs : K, Q, 5, 4, 6
Dimonds: A, 5

tom knows the number
jack know the suite

tom doesn't know the suite just by the number unless it's one of the unique numbers: j,k, 8, 2, 7, 3, 6
jack knows the suite, he can only know that tom doesn't know for certain is if the suite doesn't contain one of thsoe unique numbers, so spades and clubs are eliminated

so you are left with
hearts: a, q, 4
dimonds: a, 5

now tom knows for sure which suite it is only if the number is not a, so it's either q, 4, or 5
now jack knows it's not a, so he's left with
hearts: q, 4
diamonds: 5
if it's hearts, he doesn't know which number because therea re two, so it has to be diamonds 5

K, J, 8, 2, 7, 3, 6 are only in the suits spades and clubs, so if Jhon tells Jack Hearts or Diamoind, then Jack knwos Tom must not have been told K, J, 8, 2, 7, 3, 6

but jack says "Jack: "I know you don't know""

which implies that as soon as jack is told the suite, he knows immediately that it's an impossibility for tom to know. he knows this before tom said he doesnt know. if it is spades or clubs, then tom could know because spades/club contains some ofhte unique numbers, then jack could not be certain that tom doesn't know
uh... isn't that what I said?

Whew, now I can go pass that logic test tomorrow. :)
