You'll want to be more specific.

What is your budget?
Are you currently invested in any existing ecosystem through your phone?
What do you want to do with the tablet?

Size is actually (in my opinion) secondary to those questions.

I'd suggest going to a store and using a few to get a feel for the sizes. Beyond that, there's not a whole lot of difference, but larger tablets do tend to cost more, so you may want to stick with the 7"-8" tablets given your budget.

Well, s/he has to start somewhere. It's not like everyone knew when they would need tablets a few years ago. Plus, I would say it is very likely one will find a way (more than a way) to enjoy a tablet quite easily.

To the OP, I would suggest the new Nexus 7. It is palm-able, pocket-able, and among the lightest yet its performance is among the best. The difference between 7"~8" tablets and 9"~10" are as simple as you can imagine - (screen) size & weight, and possibly more flexible connectivities for larger tablets.
