Want to kill network password dialog in Win98

Muse

Lifer
When booting my Windows 98 machine I get this dialog:

Enter your network password for Microsoft Networking.

I don't want to have to see that dialog. I have no password. I just turned on Client for Microsoft Networks so I can see the other machine on my network. Is there a way to stop that dialog from happening? Thanks!

get TweakUI, you can set it up so that it automatically logs in for you.

TueakUI! I haven't used that since I was using Windows 95! OK. There's no other way?

Thanks.

TweakUI is not necessary. There's a drop down box in Network Properties that let's you choose the login method. You want "Windows Family Logon," I think. As long as you don't set a password for your Windows profile, it will log you in automatically.

You beat me to the punch - That's exactly it. One thing to add - If it still asks you for a password, delete c:\windows\*.pwl - Those are your password list files. If you delete them, it will "forget" you and allow you to enter a username with a blank password upon login.

Well, that's what it's doing now. It allows me to enter a blank password upon login but I don't want it to prompt me for a password at all. It's not really a big deal because I seldom use Windows 98, but come to think of it there's an application that only runs on Windows 98 that I may be using a whole lot in the near future, so it would be nice if I didn't have to log on to the network. My Windows 2000 machines don't require my loging in at any time. Nobody uses my machines or network but me so logging in is silly. Thanks for the help.

Do not know what you have against TweakUI.

Probably the best free clean software ever came out of Redmond.

To make it easy to swallow the? Bitter Pill" a linky for you: TweakUI.

Thanks JackMDS! I don't have anything against it other than the overhead of DL, installation and configuration. I know that TweakUI isn't the simplest thing in the world. Haven't used it for 3+ years or so. I suppose it's worth it if I'm going to use Win98 at all. Thanks again.

Edit: Going to the link I see that it's also usable in Windows 2000 (the OS I use on a daily basis). Is it worthwhile instaling TUI under Win2000 too?

Check ntfaq.com for how to auto logon to Windows 2000. You store your password in the reg and it auto logs you on.

Try Disabling Password caching

Regedit and go to the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Network\DisablePwdCaching

NOTE: This registry entry does not exist by default.

This should disable the need for the pwl file.

Make sure that yours is the only profile on the machine - i.e. make sure you remove *all* of the users' .pwl's. If there's more than one, you'll get the login dialog, even if the passwords are blank.
