want to install IE6 as stand alone

I'd like to install IE7 as the installed browser but keep IE6 around as stand alone. I know there's a zip file on evolt which is supposed to have this, but i'm a bit worried that its out-dated since the date on the zip file is from 2004.

I'd like to have IE6 running with as many of the current updates available for it.

Anyone know how i can do this? I cant resort to a virtual pc/vmware since i've only got 1gb of ram in this machine.

thanks

It depends on what you want to do with them both. Really simple browsing with IE6 is OK with the Evolt bits, but last I checked some functionality is broken. If you need to do hardcore testing of both version, really a VM is the only way.

How about upgrading your riggie with another 1GB of RAM?

If all you want to run in the VM is IE6 then give that VM 256M, that'll handle IE just fine. I would be more concerned about having to buy another Windows license for the VM.

I'd like to do that, but its a work machine so its not my decision. If it were my machine i would have absolutely put at least 2gb of ram in it, not 1.

I believe MS has made available, free of charge, a virtual image of XP w/IE6 available for download.

That seems iffy, what's to stop someone from ghosting the image, running sysprep and putting it directly their machine? Sure it'll stop at Apr1 this year but if they keep with releasing updated images that's a minor issue.

whats iffy about it? MS is releasing it...its on an MS download page. Its not from some warez site. What do i care what they have done to prevent me from abusing the download. Its there, its free, it'll work for IE6 testing purposes which is all this was originally about. Maybe they have ripped out other functionality from the OS to make it not worth stealing.

Its just a shame that we have to download a 500meg virtual OS just for testing a browser.

I wonder if apple will release an image for testing 🙂

That's what I don't get though, there has to be something in there to stop you from using it for other purposes otherwise they're essentially giving XP away.

*shrug* like i said, i dont really care what they have done to it since they are just providing it for testing IE6, so if they have crippled it in other ways, it doesnt really matter. Probably only lets you log on as a limited user so you wont have access to anything else in the system or the ability to install anything, other then maybe browser addons

I was going to try and find out but you have to run their validation tool to download it so I'll need to find a Windows machine for that.
