except that still means paying the $1.whatever for the pepsi to get my $1 song, when i can get it for ... less. and drink my 2 liter pepsi bottle for $.85, or just plain water

Exactly. Not as good as the original which isn't as good as the CD, yet you're playing around the same price if you were to get the whole CD.

Even though the DRM would be (relatively) easy to circumvent, I still wouldn't bother downloading music encoded at such a pathetic bit rate.
