My current RAM tops out at about 227/228MHz. I am looking to go 1GB (2x512MB) to 2GB(2x1GB)...I cannot populate all 4 slots on my motherboard without a 1 wait state penalty.

There is Mushkin at around $200 for basic and $260 for Redline and then other memories at $350-400 from other merchants

Whats the memory to go with? My motherboard is a MSI K8N-Neo4 Platinum, I am running a Win. 3200+.

Thanks

You're going to spend $400 on obsolete ram to get another 200mhz out of an obsolete processor?

u can use most any ddr400 and use the memory divider... just sort the numbers untill u get around 200 on the mem... i have a 3000 with a div of 166 running at 2.2 with a fsb of 245 which puts the memory at 200...

go cheap ram!!!

and how much u selling your old mem for? i'm looking for 1gb (512x2)...

the hyperx in the hot deals forum for $160 would be fine for your system...

I checked pricegrabber, but it's more what's going to be the best value than price.

Mushkin seems a good deal for their redline and like the Corsair about that same price ($250ish with both the base corsair and mushkin being $50 less).

I know the PC3200 OCZ plat rev 2 I have was the best at the time and was decently priced.

Your OC will most likely get worse if you use 2x1GB sticks. 1GB sticks will put more stress on the IMC.

I upgraded my Ocz memory in the same fashion earlier this year. I went with This memory and I run it at 3-4-3-8 1T @ 250. Never had a problem.

An Ocz rep told me if you use this memory to drop you drive strength down a little and it should be good to 265 or so.

Yeah, that's the RAM I have. Loosen the timings a bit, use dividers and adjust the HTT down a notch and you should easily get 250 on the FSB. The Plat V.2 does not OC well at tightest timings.

My 175 is at 250x10 (1:1) and I went from 2x512MB of Ballistix DDR500 @2.5-3-3-5 to 2 x1GB OCZ Plat. EB DDR500 @3-3-2-8. Those Ballistix overclock very well but on my board they require upwards of 2.9v. On 2.7v and 3-4-4-8 I can get the OCZ up to 260MHz easy. Not bad for a pair of 1GB sticks. If you can find them they would be a good buy.

BTW I have a 4400+ 89W and it definitely clocks higher than this 175. At 2500MHz stable, the X2 takes 1.425v to 1.375v for the Opteron. But, I've run the X2 at 2750MHz. The Opty can barely get into Windows at 2.6GHz.
