want to get smtp

Not sure if this is the right form to ask, but I'm looking for an outgoing smtp server so I can send emails with my laptop from any location w/o having to rely on webmail.

Since I moved recently I haven't settled on a new place, I've been using gmail's smtp server for free with Thunderbird. The downside is the "from" field shows my gmail address instead of my usual address. You can compensate somewhat by changing the settings in the "reply to" field, but that's not quite what I want.

If there's a free smtp service out there that won't change my "from" address, show me where to sign up. But if not, I'm looking for a place with a one-time lifetime membership fee that's not so expensive. I don't want to pay a yearly subscription. Anyone know a place? I really only want the outgoing smtp server, but if this fee includes other stuff such as additional email addies or some webspace, I'm not gonna complain.

edit: I know about the software "freesmtp server", but it has never worked on any ISP I've tried it with. I'm looking for a "normal" solution

Your ISP provides you with smtp servers to use. Most do not require authentication as long as you are on their network, so you can use any email address that you like in conjunction with their servers.

Since I moved I don't have yet an ISP of my own (currently mooching), and even still when I travel and use my notebook I'd be off my ISP's network and need an outgoing server I can use anywhere. I never knew this until I got my first notebook last year, visited my family overseas and found I could receive emails on my laptop but not send them.

Only smooth way to do this is to use a hosted mail server as you'll run into a bunch of relaying issues not to mention becoming an easy target for spam lists. Just a normal web host or a hosted exchange service like intermedia would work well.

I'm fine with that, but I'd like recommendations to one one that is really cheap or gives me lifetime access for a one-time fee. Some searching pointed me to here:

Now $5/yr is pretty damn cheap, but if possible I really would prefer a one-time fee for lifetime membership w/o yearly subscription (I realize there are some downsides, such as "what happens if this hypothetical one-time fee company goes under", but it's still what I want).

If you want an outgoing SMTP server that you can access from anywhere, you need to be sure it has a webmail option or else it's an Exchange Server that can use Outlook RPC over HTTPS. Many ISPs block outbound TCP Port 25 traffic, making it impossible to send to any SMTP server other than the ISP's.
