i have never heard of anybody getting canceled by their cell providor because they roam too much.

Well, it makes sense. If your provider is going to be charged more then what you're paying them, I can see them dropping you. Makes sense.

Cingular has started enforcing this, as of last week if I'm not mistaken.

As I understend it, nothing. They, OTOH, have to pay an outrageous per-minute charge to the roaming carrier. Hence the reason for dropping people if their roaming minutes are excessive.

Haha nice, however I am very happy with T-mobile and their 1 year contracts , but this might come in handy should I ever want to drop them, but I need to take a look at my service agreement if anything exists like in the cingular contract

Yeah, like hell they'll drop cancellation fees.
If they drop cancellation fees, you can be sure they will instead increase up front charges such as the cost of the mobile phone, and possibly the monthly charge.

In the end you don't win from losing cancellation fees.

I work for cingular. They don't make you pay cancellation fees if WE cancel your contract.

Does this mean that one can roam within their normal coverage area?

We have a lot of them, with non interopable bands and spotty coverage. There are huge populated regions of the US with no cell service!

YES

Every phone I've had has a "roaming only" setting.

You won't necessarily have to pay any roaming charges, even with Sprint. Just add roaming option onto your plan for $5/month for unlimited roaming.

Get a new plan and that won't happen any more.

Also, this doesn't work with most carriers. ALL carriers (major carriers, anyway) have that stipulation, and Cingular is the first I've EVER heard of that enforces it. Verizon's been doing the free roaming the longest, and they don't drop someone for roaming too much.

BTW, his claim that carriers pay "$.69 a minute" to other carriers when you roam on their networks is utterly bogus.
