So I was talking with my dad, just discussing how empty :)( ) our relationship has been since I went to college, and even throughout my childhood.

This summer we were thinking of getting a neat hobby we could do together during this coming summer. I thought it would be cool to get an old car (His first was and old Impala) and fix it up.

But the only problem is, neither of us knows jack about working on cars. Yeah... changing the oil or fuses is about as much as we can do, though he is an electrical engineer, and always liked tinkering around with stuff, for what its worth.

So how hard exactly would it be to get into this kind of thing? Is there any particular way one can learn... community college classes or anything like that? What about kit cars?

Or should we just stick to golf.....

why don't you make your hobby "making money"?

then you can pay Quixfire to do the work for you...

you should probably know a bit before you get into kit cars.

Are you guys pretty good at following directions? Buy a beater in decent shape for pretty cheap, get the Factory Service Manual, and perform a complete teardown and rebuild of the engine. You'll learn a lot, and if you do anything wrong you won't be out much money. Once you feel pretty confident in your mechanical skills, go ahead and get a car you actually care about.

Good luck, hope you and your dad have fun.

i concur...

or you could do what i am doing and get into a car that you like, meet a lot of people who know about the stuff in case you have questions or need help, and otherwise work on all sorts of things w/ ur dad....

You could probably find a book at Borders or on Amazon.com that would give you an idea as to what you are in for when you take on a project car.

Having a friend who is a mechanic or has alot of experience working on cars is your only key. Just reading directions doesn't really get you the full knowledge when it comes to this kind of stuff.

It would help if you get something that has a huge aftermarket and tons of books that go over ever single detail of a restoration like a 65-66 mustang.

If you want to do something with your father, start by modding a vehicle that is already up and running, start slow by adding suspension mods then slowly work your way up to the big ticket items, jumping right in and trying to do a full restoration with no experience is not only going to be painful but very expensive.

Generally older vehicles from the sixties are much easier to work on because of their simplicity.
