Want to get into classical... Loved Canon by Pachelbel

Any sub genre is fine, contemporary or classics, whatever is good.

I love classical-like movie soundtracks which now got me into the real classicals. For the movie soundtracks, Hans Zimmer is one of my fav. composer (the man behind the scores of Gladiator, Lion King, Black Hawk Down, and more) I also loved A Beautiful Mind soundtrack by James Horner. And here are some classicals I know and like...

It should be noted that not all music with a string instrument constitutes classical. A lot of people seem to cite soundtracks as classical, which in mosts cases they certainly are not.

BBC Music Magazine might be worth subscribing to for a year, it's around $10/issue but every issue includes a CD with full-length performances (not "demos" = excerpts / samples). This helps you try out a wide variety of composers and periods.

Orff's carmina burana is good, the o fortuna is used a lot in movies, etc. You've probably heard it before.

"Row Row Row Your Boat" is the same sort of music as Pachobel's Canon.
They are both canons.

Check out RCA Victor compilations. They're cheap, good recordings, generally ear-friendly and can provide some direction for you as to what you may like.

some of Vanessa Mae's variations on traditional classical pieces are interesitng (Canon in D, some Mozart stuff)
I just unearthed a whole bunch of beethoven piano sonatas that I'm really enjoying. Rachmaninoff has some pretty good stuff (PC#3), and I also like Mendelssohn and Schubert (some very romantic stuff).

If you wanna be cheap you can find classical versions of Rock songs by London Symphony Orchestra otherwise i recommend the obvious (Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Mozart) along with Carmina Burana, Andrea Boccelli, Gershwin and a whole bunch of others...
