I've had Eclipse, Pioneer, and Alpine head units in various cars over the years. My favorite was the Alpine.

I have a Pioneer 740MP ($230 from thezeb.com) and it's a great unit for listening to one mp3 after another, but it's a bit slow in the switching. As far as I can tell, it doesn't remember the index/layout of the mp3 cd and has to re-read the index everytime it switches to a new file - which makes it slow if you're skipping around. Also, this unit doesn't fast-forward or rewind very well with mp3s and the optional changers cannot be loaded with mp3 cds (not sure if any retail models can, but I did test it out with the 1270? changer).

Overall, I'm still happy with my HU as I really never intended to listen to mp3s on it (audio fidelity snobbery I learned when people were ripping like crap) but the radio1 essential mixes (2 hr long sets) have forced me to reconsider.

I have the Alpine 9807... it kicks ASS. I paid 280 for mine like an idiot... I have seen them on ebay go for about 210. AWESOME HU.

Alpine decks are the best bang for the buck. Dont even consider sony, jvc, pioneer, etc.

Excellent, thanks for all the feedback. I also found this forum last night. Tons of information.

I read about people using thezeb.com so they must be pretty reliable. I didn't know if the installation kits from Crutchfield were any better than from the other sites.

get an install kit from like walmart, cheap and just as good. scoshe should be the brand.

alpine is a nice deck, however MANY ppl do nut use the features it provides.

i have a kenwood mp919 deck and its nice. pioneers are nice.

DO NOT consider sony's their less exspensive h.u's suck ass.

pionner, and alpine are very nice.

now eclipse h/u' s are supposedly the SH!T and they have a 4 year theft warranty program, however you have to find an authorized dealer, and only their lowend model supports mp3's.
