I used to play TF ofter a few years back and I have lately been itching to play again. The issue is things seemed to have really changed. I don't understand any of these updates with items, crafting, etc.

Please explain how the dynamics have changed and whats the best way to get back into the game.

Thanks!

I just recently played TF2 for the first time and found all the changes as compared to TFC very confusing and overwhelming. As a heavy weapons guy I would get "critted" by a scout and die from one hit. I think it might have had something to do with the hat he was wearing, but I can't be sure. I haven't played more than 30 minutes since I bought it.

To start off with don't worry about the items and crafting to begin with.
You can still play TF2 very effectively with just the vanilla weapons.
The new items just allow for a different play style, if you so choose.

As for items they drop randomly, but you can also get most of them by completing achievements in game.
If you end up with duplicates you can "craft" them in to other items and hats.
Check out the Team Fortress 2 Wiki (http://wiki.teamfortress.com/wiki/Main_Page).
And if you are looking for a great place to play check out the Couch Athletics servers, much fun to be had there.

Items can be randomly found as you play. You get a chance every 15-20 minutes I believe it is. You can additionally earn the items through completing the achievements for each class. Every Milestone achievement has an item unlock associated with it. There have been lots of items introduced lately though not attached to such achievements, so the only way to obtain those is to find them, craft them, trade, or buy them in the Mann Store (real $$$).

Outside of a couple of exceptions, the items are meant to be side-grades that address certain weaknesses of the class and usually introduce another. For instance, the sniper can unlock a shield that is a protection against spy backstabs but it takes up your secondary item slot so no machine gun or pee jar can be carried.

Check out the TF2 wiki for all the crafting recipes and better organization of all the info I'm sure you need.

This is what has been holding me back. I used to either play mostly as a medic or engineer and enjoyed the support roles but all the changes seem a bit overwhelming. It used to be easy to adjust your tactics depending on the threat but now I have to worry about hats and other items :/

Thanks for the encouragement, I think I will drop by tonight and see how I fare. I was playing before all of the class updates even and I remember hearing horror stories about server full of one class trying to get the unlocks.

Crit-a-Cola. Replaces the Scout's pistol. Can be drunk and then for the next few seconds, the Scout fires critical shots. Is devastating at close range with the Scattergun. It's overwhelming at first but you'll learn everything quickly if you stick with it. It's no different then learning any new game.

Really, this game doesn't deserve to be called teamfortress for all the bastardization thats been done to it. Quake(world) had teamfortress and it was a pure vanilla game. Now we come to this that shares really just the name only with too much extra fluff...

I miss the games of the mid 90's. Those were the groundbreaking games that set the stage and were pure fun. You install the game and in just a few mins could be in playing without having to ask questions on a forum, trying to figure out all the gotchas, etc.

Fan Minicrits do 88 if every pellet hits, which is 4 shots to kill a heavy.

He didn't get 1 shotted by a scout as a heavy unless he was already injured, or the scout got 2 full crits in a row. Possible with Kritzkrieg or first blood, but I'd say it's much more likely he didn't see the other person who hit him. Happens to me with demo spam, rockets and snipers all the damned time.

TFC and TF2 are very different. I came from qwtf btw.

Umm crits are usually enabled by default in pubs and it's just a random chance that the attack will do massive damage. I forgot exactly why they were added.

No hand grenades so no conc jumping. Heavy went from hard as hell to use in qwtf to easier in tfc to real easy in tf2. Just spray.

Medics are very important in tf2. Maybe the most important.

default rockets are slower than in tfc. sniper is underpowered vs tfc. real underpowered vs qwtf.

spies are much funner/easier in tf2.

demo is a lot stronger/easier in tf2.

scout is damn useful in tf2.

soldier is probably the same just slower rockets by default. Maybe less splash damage and less knockback.

engy is damn useful in tf2. level 3 teleports are very important on the payload?/push maps.

sniper plays similar to tfc just the gun is so damn underpowered. also stray bullets from heavies mess your aim up.

pyro is circle strafe + flame. No launcher.

Old games were better because they're older!

Seriously if you can't figure out TF2, how are you even managing to type your posts? It's pretty simple. Shit either makes you invulnerable, get mini crits, get mini critted, or crit. Teh end.

Play a server called toy fort elite, thats how I got into TF2. Just find a good server and stick with it.

The down side being all the hits he takes is also criticals.

Wow...I haven't TF2 since it first came out and it was a lot of fun. The "upgrades" sound retarded IMHO. What a shame. TFC FTW.

Crits dont belong in Team Fortress anything and neither does crit cola or whatever the fuck was mentioned earlier.

Oh I agree. But making it out as though the game is really that baffling with the items in it is just silly.

Actually I don't mind the items generally. They keep you on your toes, but I think we could do without random crits and a lot of the mini crit buffs/debuffs.

Just ignore all the item bullshit. All of it. Okay, there are a few weapons that may be worth a look vs. the stock ones, but in general, they're worse or designed for a specific style of play.

I delete any duplicate items I get. Ignore crafting, it's pointless. Ignore hats, they're pointless. Just try to focus on playing the game. However, it's not an easy game to get into. Last time I tried playing I just got killed out of nowhere a bunch and I got maybe one kill.

I never played TFC so I can't compare the two but I did play TF2 from release day and I think it still plays the same as it does now. The only difference is that everybody looks like a clown with their mismatching hats. Crafting is just something to do on the side with your drops. Just trade anything you don't want for something you want... like a specific hat or weapon. The new Halloween maps are pretty fun.

Scouts were very useful in TFC because they revealed spies on contact.

It is MUCH EASIER to spy check in TF2 yet people fail SO hard. Just shoot everyone that's holding the default gun, no penalty except for lost ammo.

If you shot people in TFC, you'd remove their armor, but no health damage would be lost, but that might depend on the server for health team dmg.

I'd also say that engies were super useful in TFC also, but that's cuz I played engineer or medic most of the time.

Pyros no longer have the fire rockets, but they do have flare guns, which is a secondary weapon that can be unlocked/discovered in-game that has a similar effect.

Yeah. This. I don't get it. If you don't want the RPG part of it (I don't - I generally don't like them..... I've got like 4 crates I haven't even opened to see what my surprise is) then don't use them...What's the big deal. You're not missing that much. Just play the game, and then ask people "in game" if you have specific questions on something.....Most of the servers I play on have cool guys who will help you out.

it's not team fortress unless you and a buddy on ethernet with voodoo cards can pick soldiers, spam nail grenades to lag everyone on dial up with riva 128s, gank the flag before their computers have caught up, and score.
