Want to get a new Ipod...

All right, so my 3G Mini has served me well, but it's on it's last leg, and I need alot more space. However, I'm hesitant to buy a new Ipod. When are the next-gen Ipods supposed to be released? I don't want to get stuck buying something that will be replaced in two months. Also, what about this Microsoft Zune? Should I consider it?

Next-gen iPods are probably going to come out pre-2006 holiday season, for obvious reasons. Not really sure what Apple has planned, though - I've heard rumors of wireless, full touch-screen player, movie/PMP format... who knows.

MS Zune may be a worthy alternative to the iPod, but I doubt that the first version of it will do much good. Microsoft has a lot of weight and $$$ to throw around, though, and I'm sure they're making this a top priority, so it'll get much better very quickly if it debuts crappily.
 
depends what you are looking for and whether you want to wait. I doubt either M$ or APPLE are going to release anything new by Xmas. There is plenty of sound competition to ipods at present and price are lower already. Look at U10 from iRiver, Cowon x5 or Zen Vision M. I believe any of these players beat ipod on features and quality.
 
What is a 3rd G mini? There were only 2 Gens.

Apple will probably release an update between now and the end of the year, but not a new ipod. definitely not the "true" video ipod.

Zune will probably be coming out november, december.it will have the same vertical interface such as the itunes+ipod interface. but it will not be compatible with plays for sure.

He said 3G, not 3rd. I can only assume this means 3 Gig.
I wont speculate further because I have no clue what capcities they come in.
I only got a shuffle, 512MB and I didnt like it much.

That doesn't make sense either... there were 4gb and 6gb minis.

There are new rumors that Zune will be an audio-only device at first. It seems like MS is having some problems...
 
I'm still confused. Because there is no 3rd Generation Mini or a 3GB version. Anyways, about a new ipod, I'd wait for a nano refresh, because of the rumors about an aluminum exterior so it will be more like the mini.

OP mentioned that he wants more space, so a nano refresh won;t really help him.

OP, I'm in the same boat as you, actually, and I'm just waiting for the next gen. It'll definitly be here by christmas, and possibly sooner, so for now I'd just chill, or buy a zen.
 
It will if the rumors are true and Apple would be releasing a 8GB Nano. But thats speculation. Maybe you'd be better off buying a different brand of MP3 players.

Well, if he's just looking for a little bit more space, i'd get a Sandisk Sansa. Muuuuch better than the nano IMHO, and can be found for much cheaper. Plus it's expandable with a microSD slot.

I bought my 20GB iPod Photo a month before the 30GB video was released. I mean, I could care less about playing video on my iPod, but 30 extra gigs? I could use that right about now, all my music doesnt fit on this one... plus it's the same price. Well live and learn I guess, I've got this damn 7800GT as well. Anyway, I say wait for the Zune and an Apple announcement.

 
I just got a nano 2GB, and I think I'm going to sell it for the Sansa. The nano is okay but there are way too many features I'll never use and I don't like that you have to use software to copy music to it.
