is there any way I can do this without losing massive amounts of quality? my brother said I could convert it to mpg then make a vcd, but those have never looked very good if I recall correctly. thanks!

That's probably the only way to do it from what I know... or get a DVD player that plays divx movies.

are those common at all?

I think there are only a few of them made... not common at all, at least in the US.

If your source material is good, the quality loss should be minimal, especially if you create an SVCD rather than a standard VCD. Check here for more info. The simplest method is to download a copy of TMPGEnc, it will allow you to create SVCDs and is fairly simple to use.

Yup, I do it all the time. Except now that I have a DVD burner I don't make SVCDs anymore. SVCD is as close to DVD quality as you can get with a cd.

I agree - it costs as much as a Lite-On player that will play that type of video but you get the bonus of being able to play video games on it!

Sure, if you want to switch between 5 CDs as you are watching a movie.

Does it make much of a difference if you crank up the video bitrate on an SVCD from say 1600 to 2500 in TMPGenc?
