So ive been getting in shape, but the running thing isnt working with my knees. So i tried biking with a few friends and i took a liking to it.

What kind of bike should i get? I would want one that i could go trailing with but also could ride the pavement smoothly as well.

Any experienced bikers here?

I'd reccomend going to a bikestore and getting something decent.

250-300$ ish in a bike from Trek, Cannondale, Gary Fisher, etc will do well for ya. Get a hardtail mountain bike with semi-slicks (ask about it, they'll point you to some tire choices), and you wont be disappointed.

Hell, I'd take a simple Sturmey-Archer as well!

The Honda has a variable speed transmission and can shift without pedaling... :) too bad it costs more than a freaking car.

Oh well maybe in a couple of years it'll trickle down.

EDIT: Hey those are pretty cool hubs...

Sorry, there are no experienced bikers here.

J/K. There will be loads of replies to this thread. I predict 5+ pages.

Edit-I'd get a MTB from a decent bike shop and buy a second set of wheels for it for road riding. You will be most happy.

If you decide later on that you might like to do more road riding you can always buy a decent road bike.

Look to spend about $300-400 for a decent bike and another $150 or so for an extra set of wheels with road tires and freewheel (I'm assuming you want to go cheap here).

Hybrid like what model? Can you be more specific? Use the Specialized line up for example and pick a model.

The Sirrus is a hybrid... its basically a roadbike with a MTB riding position.

Personally I think a cyclocross bike would be better but would cost more. Cheapest way is to probably buy an entry level MTB and just put slicks on them or semi-slicks at the least.
