Want to eventually get better tires...

It'll be awhile since the tires on the car still have quite a bit of tread on them. But, being in Florida, I'm tired of All-Season tires. Today it's going to be almost 70 here. lol. I want to switch to a good performance tire. Something that I might even see a drop in times on the drag strip if that's possible. It does rain plenty here. But, that's it. Car will still be daily driven and with family. It's a 2005 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP

Stock tire size is 225 55/R17

I'm not sure how much I can deviate from that if a certain tire doesn't come exactly in that size, but I would to get a nice tire.

I already know the sacrifices that will probably be made. But, I'm looking for a good balance of treadwear and performance. I'm willing to give up the "All-Season" longevity for some more grip.

I replaced the tires on my Infiniti a while back and put on a set of Yokohama Avid Envigor. It was a huge improvement over the stock M35 tires after 30k. I just downgraded from the M35 to the G35 and may repeat the purchase.

while they are still all seasons, I bought them to ensure wet weather traction as that is the main hazard here in Florida.

You should give the Yokohama S.Drives a shot. I have them as street tires on my Miata and they are very well behaved. It's a bit lighter than other tires in that size, which will be a big plus to performance and feel. The only reason they're not on my Speed3 is because I am still on OEM/winter tires :awe:

Check out this tire rack test.

S.Drive ranked 1st, and apparently got the best mileage too.

I'm liking the marks on the S. Drive.

and yeah I may spend some money on suspension. But, the COMP G already rides so stiff as it is. lol

I was going to suggest S-Drives as well. Had a set put on recently, so far so good, even in the rain.

Yeah, the tire rack review said they wanted a little more wet grip, but I never had an issue. I even did the Kankamagus highway in the rain last summer on my S.Drives.

Can't find much with that stock tire size that I'd recommend.. Is it really a 225/55?

If you can find the right size.. Hankook RS-3s, Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Specs, Bridgestone RE-11s.. for something that wears better, Hankook Ventus V12 evo K110s.

I guess I'd go S.drives as well. I had Falken 452s before and did not like them.

Holy serious performance tires batman. Locals who win "modified" class in auto-x run Star Specs.

I know. 🙂

I've run RS-3s on my G35 when autoxing/tracking (also daily driving them right now since I'm too lazy to swap wheels with all this rain) and plan to do the same on the Miata once I get that sorted out. 225/45/15s on a 15x9 6UL sounds awesome.

Off topic: I'm surprised the modified class is using Star Specs though.. is it an indexed class? Most of the modified cars here are on V710s or A6s.

SCCNH kinda does their own thing when it comes to classing cars because there is such a wide spread.

I am going to try out some Toyo Proxes in the upcoming auto-x season on my miata, we'll see how that goes. Treadwear 40 should be sweet :awe:

seems like a couple of good/affordable tires have been mentioned.

since your not doing any racing might want to consider General Exclaim UHP, they seem to cost about 15% less then the big boys but should be just as good. Me personally i've been going back between the UHP and the v12 evo

Do you even drag this car?

You may be paying for tires you won't use.

That said I have really liked the Goodyear Asymmetrics...

PS2's are another favorite.

Don't expect much tire life past 15,000 miles.

I'm running falken 615s on my miata for summer/autox but plan on going with the Star Specs when the 615s wear out. Their stiff sidewalls for handling might not be the greatest at drag though. Running my all season tires on stock rims for winter and man my car rides so much better. Those 615s plus stiff springs are rough.

Yes I do. Haven't much, but I plan on it with a track only 20 minutes from the house. I also plan on modding this car a bit. Pulley and such. Plus when I'm alone I'm pretty spirited as well.

Buy a set of street-slicks and swap em out before you go to the track. Only need two tires and you can prolly get by with using a wider tire on a 16x8" wheel. 245's should fit.

You should find a forum for your car. I haven't looked, but there are typically 2 to 5 forums for every make/model that has ever been made.

Aside from that the handling of a car is tied to the suspension and tires which are a system. Tire side wall height directly interacts with the suspension stiffening/softening corresponding to narrow & wider sidewalls. Add to that the center of gravity ...is the car lowered at all?

There are forums for this also and plenty of interesting read. Fun stuff ... and did I say interesting?

With such a nose heavy FWD car - no matter the tire the car is gonna understeer and plow like crazy.

I'd install some suspension components before I'd spend $125 on a summer performance tire. Bigger sway bars would be a good help along with some new end links.

I wouldn't bother with any of that either. Just put on some cheap tires. I have Riken Raptors in 225/55-17 on my '03 Maxima. They are decent in the rain and handle well enough for a mid-size family sedan...which is what it is. They sometimes follow the grooves in the road a little bit but it's nothing major or show stopping.

I had PS2's on it prior to this and wouldn't bother wasting the money on those again.
