we got some new lcds and computers, we want to donate the computers to charity, what steps should i take to wipe everything clean.. i was reading somehwere that you really can't clean the hardrive.

depends on how sensitive the data on it is

the company i work at, old hard drives are melted down in a smelter, so that there is ZERO chance of customer information being compromised

but if the risk is lower , you can get some programs the NSA uses (or the web sites claim they do anyway) to do a super duper erase/delete of the drive, i think it takes several hours (maybe longer) per drive
 
well... I would just do a low level format and use a data wiper that will write 0's to all empty space. If the data is over written it can't possibly be recovered.
