Want to cook something for 4 people on saturday

so, i would like to cook something for my family on saturday night.

it wont be fish, as my brother isnt a huge fan of it, but shellfish are alright.

steak is fun, but not that difficult.

anyone have any suggestions? im looking for a decent sized dish for 4 people, tasty, can be spicy, but not overly, but overall just tastes good.

and i need to have most of the pots/pans necessary, but not the ingredients.

edit: any good Baby Back Rib recipes? i could do that, if i get everything prepared friday, and have my mom cook it before i come home from work, in the oven, then ill finish it on the grill, or what not.

Braised beef short ribs is usually an impressive, yet easy dish. You'll need a couple pots, and a large pan. One short rib per person, some side of vegetables, and a good red wine.

minus the entire fact that my family doesnt drink wine...

well, i have, but im not 21.

Got a crockpot?

Buy a nice 5-6lb pork butt or pot roast. Couple onions quartered. Bag of baby carrots. Bag of red potatoes. 2 cans of low sodium beef broth.

Saturday morning put it all in the crockpot and cover with the broth and some water. Add 2 bay leaves and four tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce . Cover and cook on high until your fambly shows up to eat.

Bask in their adoration.

Meh.. its pennsylvania and its freaking cold outside for me.

I love to make homemade soups... with either homebaked breads or croutons.
Vegetable Beef
Chicken Noodle
Ham Barley
Brocolli Cheese
Pork Chop Soup (Pork Chops + Potatoes + Carrots baked in tomato soup)

Do a casserole or a crock pot dish. Easy, little work, and you don't have to monitor it while the guests are there.

Teriyaki Chicken, grilled pineapple, jasmine rice, green beans.

The colors look great together and it is delicious.

Chef's/Shepard's Pie, easy to make and tasty.

Shepherd's Pie Recipe
This is a tasty shepherd's pie made with ground beef, mashed potatoes, and seasonings. Scroll down for more Shepherd's Pie Recipes, including several using leftover beef.

* 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef
* 2 tablespoon butter
* 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
* 2 eggs, separated
* 6 tablespoons butter
* 8 potatoes, peeled, boiled, and mashed
* 1 cup finely chopped onion
* 1 tablespoon ketchup
* beef broth
* 1/2 cup heavy cream
* 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
* Parmesan cheese

Brown ground beef and sauté onions in 2 tablespoons butter until golden. Mix ground beef with onions, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Add a few tablespoons of beef broth and cook, covered, over low heat for 15 to 20 minutes, adding more beef broth as necessary to keep moist. Beat egg yolks until light, then in another bowl, beat whites until stiff. Beat the yolks, cream, 6 tablespoons butter, and garlic powder into hot mashed potatoes. Gently fold in beaten egg whites. Put meat mixture into a casserole then top with potato mixture. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese and bake at 350° until potato topping is puffed and browned, about 25 to 35 minutes.

Italian Meatloaf:

2 lbs. ground round

1 lb. ground veal

1 lb. ground pork

2 eggs, slightly beaten

1/4 C. red wine (optional)

1/2 C. Parmesan cheese

1 C. crushed saltines

1 t. oregano

1 t. basil

1 t. garlic powder (or 2 cloves crushed garlic)

1/2 t. salt

1 t. pepper

1 C. prepared spaghetti sauce

1/2 lb. hard salami, sliced thin

1/2 lb. provolone cheese, sliced thin

Chopped fresh parsley for garnish

In a stainless steel bowl, combine the first 12 ingredients as listed above, using care not to smash, press or massage the mixture too much. This causes a dry meat loaf.

Divide the mixture in half.

On a sheet of waxed paper, pat out a rectangle of meat loaf approximately 8-inches by 15 inches. Divide salami and provolone in half and layer this portion on top of the meat loaf leaving a 2-inch margin so that mixture will not liquefy and run out upon baking.

Roll up, jelly roll style, and seal seams well. Place in a 9- by 5-inch loaf pan. Repeat procedure with other half portion of meat loaf and salami and cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. Suction off accumulated grease with turkey baster or pour off.

Spoon on 1/2 cup prepared spaghetti sauce on each meat loaf and return to oven for an additional 15 minutes. Remove from oven. Let sit 10 minutes. Remove from pan. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve.

Makes 12 servings.
