Can someone tell me what codecs, filters, settings, apps I should use for the best results. I've played around with Premiere and Virtualdub, but the abundance of settings has me a bit bewildered. The outputs I've been getting so far with divx is pretty blocky.

use dvd2svcd. Find it here. Get the demo version of CCE 2.5, or TMPGEnc in the same place.

Select avi as input, DVD format as output. Press "go" and wait. you fill end up with a DVD image you can burn with nero. The guide is on doom9 somewhere. (also check out dvdrhelp for more guides)

Hey, thanks for your advice. I eventually ended up using Ulead DVD Workshop. It was really easy to use and covered all the steps needed to convert from DV to a burned DVD.
