Want to compress a movie into Divx or something like that

I have a lot of movies. I also don't really enjoy having each movie take up 5+GB of space.

So I'm thinking the other day, why not compress it???

Thing is, I have no idea how (ok, I have an idea, sorta).

I know I have to use DVD Decrypter to remove the encryption. I also know that (i think) I have to use VirtualDub to make the VOB into an AVI. Then I guess use Divx to compress the AVI???

Am I close? Also, some of it needs some subtitles as well. Anything to do that??

I'm doing this because my Laptop HD (and regular HD) is only so big and I don't like carrying all those DVD's around when I travel sometimes. I actually got the idea watching anime that was compressed in mkv :p (which uses divx), go figure...

Thanks.

you can use this guide or check out www.videohelp.com there are more guides there, plus forums and whatnot.

Well, I was close.
Thanks

Were it says to use Xvid in the guide, can I use Divx instead? Or does it really not matter?

First, rip with DVD Decryptor to an ISO file. Then
Do yourself a favor and get the freeware Fairuse Wizard. I use it all the time, in fact it's encoding a dvd for me right now. You can encode divx, xvid, or the more advanced x264 (what i use) and for audio (multiple tracks OK) you can go ac3, mp3, or ogg (what I use- 36 kpbs sounds good with ogg). Subittles can be included- either "burned in" to the movie or in a seperate file. The downside to the freeware version of Fairuse is you're limited to 700 per file, but I'm OK with that.
My second choice is AutoGK, which i used before FairUse, I believe it dosn't have that filesize limit and I think you have to opt-out of some spyware during installation (don't remember) but it's good also.

Alright, I'm having a bit of trouble with the Fairuse Wizard.

For some reason it keeps screwing up the aspect ratio (i think). Black bard appear on the sides even if I have the same input and output res. (720x480 -> 720x480). With the normal DVD, the movie (which is ws) would fill up the whole screen. (I have a WS monitor). even if I disable Resizing in FFDSHOW, it still looks scretched up and down.

You can use Divx or any other video codec installed in your computer, I like to use Xvid and encode it with a single pass and 1500 kbps bitrate and I get pretty good quality with less encoding time than that guide, and I use MP3 audio instead of AC3, that yields smaller files.

One change I'd like to make to that guide:
On this page, they recommend using minimum quantizers of 1. I've seen it recommended to use 2 instead. It'll greatly decrease the filesize with very little change in quality.

That's a pretty decent guide though.
