I start my job in 6 months and want to dress for the job I want (management). I am interested in buying enough suits to keep me well dressed for the week. People who are experience in this, where should I go to buy them and how many do I need in order to minimize the cost of ownership in the long run (cost buying them now vs drycleaning more often)?

I'd like a good deal but I don't want garbage either.

Thanks.

don't buy any dress shirts

in 6 months, go to brookbrothers semi annual sale, and pick up 6 shirts @3 for 150 (i mean you could theoretically do it right now, semi annual and all, but you know, time value of money)

you can thank me later

As far as the suit goes...how much are you willing to spend?

I'd go to some place like Mens Warehouse when they're having a sale and tell them you exactly what you want and they will be able to get you the right stuff that looks good.

What're your typical spending habits like for regular clothes? Is a $500 suit expensive to you? Are you able to make it to any of raja-fashions.com's stops?

buy a 800$ ticket to hong kong
buy 3 custom tailored suits for 500 each

voila, 2300$ for suits that would cost you 3000$ at home, and you get a free trip out of it

Honestly, I would recommend you take a quick trip to Hong Kong. If you wanted 10 nice suits here in the US it will host you $10,000. You can go to Hong Kong and get those same suits for easily a quarter of the price. So $1,000 to fly there and back, plus 2,000 for suits and you will be set. Plus you can do some sight seeing. Hong Kong is bad ass.

I'm thinking $1000-2000 as necessary (to start), but the less the better. I am trying to save for a house so I want to do this with some kind of reason, but also realizing that I am investing in myself.

dress shirts = brook brothers semi annual (for everday wear)
nice dress shirts + suit = off saks

Or custom tailor/BB/<insert generic luxury brand of suit that I still blow my load over here>

If you're going to be wearing a suit everyday, i would say 5 minimum. Get your basic charcoal, navy, or brown and a bunch of dress shirts and ties to match. Now are you dressing for the job you want or the job you have? I wanna be CEO..but it doesn't mean I'm gonna come in everyday wearing a suit. I just typically wear dress pants with a dress shirt. I'll throw on a tie if I have meetings to go to.

Is there one store in particular that I need to go to if I take the Hong Kong route? How much can I expect to spend? Can I just use my credit card?

Maybe my company is more casual. Only the executives where suits. Managers and supervision usually wear shirts and ties. I don't want to be in a meeting with my manager and VP and only have myself and VP in a suit.

I had about 5 suits made in Vietnam...they're pretty nice. They fit perfectly and you get to pick the fabric you want. You can either choose from the fabric the tailor has, or you can go buy your own and bring it to them. I think I paid about 250 each for mine using wool/cashmere fabric. I think most places would only take cash.

My company is casual as well, but I consider myself outgoing and do not mind being dressed up.

I should clarify that that number is not for one suit, but for x number of suits that I buy. x needs to be >= 5

If i were you and going to be wearing a suit everyday...i would get 15-20. Then again...i have more clothes than the average guy. I have about 50 dress shirts and 50 pairs of dress pants. Oh and if you go to asia...you can get dress shirts made there too.

I really like the idea of going to asia but the flights there are a bit more than $800, at least the ones I've found on expedia.

An expensive suit is only necessary if you work in a company that expects you to dress nice. Most companies do not care if you walk in with a $200 Men's Warehouse suit.

Unless you're at a high profile law firm or banking institution, they do not care.

Definitely do not go to Men's Warehouse.

The lowest I would go personally is the Jos A Bank $199 sale. If you're looking for really nice suits (which you aren't judging by the budget you posted), then get to Nordstrom and they will measure you and get you a suit brand that cuts to your body. From there, they will tailor it to your body's specifics. Expect to spend 1-2k per suit there though...

Can most people tell between an expensive suit and a "cheap" suit at a glance?

i would say... 50% of the general public can. its more of the fit than anything.

plus, if hes doing this for work purposes, hes not tryign to appeal to the general public, but to peers (and uppers)

800$ on Northwest, 800$ on Air Canada, 800$ on United, 800$ on ASIANA (pimp-dope carrier), 900$ on China Air, etc....
