All you get a blank(well, preinstalled, for 1st use) laptop.

Be ready to spend $60 to Lenovo for Recovery discs or to buy OS again - from other source.
Lenovo doesn't give option to burn Recovery Discs, only let's you make a USB Recovery Drive - ONLY, ONLY if you keep that HDD intact...no SSD, no another HDD - USB Recovery won't work on if you want to put new HDD or SSD...

If you look in Product details page, it says: Operating System: Windows 8...

However, Lenovo tech (877-453-6686) told me that they sell only licence to Win8...

Well...good laptop..."devil made it buy"...Won't buy again anything Lenovo...will buy Win7 retail - better will pay $100 to greedy Bill than $60 for schmuks @ Lenovo and will forget that Lenovo exists...

3 laptop experiences with Acer was great...Lenovo had to make some scat....

Don't buy laptops from ne.

Youre suppose to buy from the source aka the lenovo store.

The only good place to buy a Lenovo laptop is from Lenovo, and you get it configured exactly as you want it. When you deal with a 3rd party, i.e., Newegg, they can only deal with what they have in stock.

I've bought 4-5 laptops from newegg, all Acer, never had a single issue, even never needed to contact Acer support...

Now, I got into this BS with Lenovo...never again....

I don't have experience to back this up, but I remember reading somewhere that machines that ship with Windows 8 are required to have the license imbeded in the bios, thus making it possible to reinstall Windows 8 with any install disc, such as the one you can download from MS via Digital River. This makes recovery discs a moot thing and allows the user more flexibility with reinstalls and updating hardware. I'd do a bit more research before assuming that they are completely screwing you.

I know..."Western people have Choices".... and in communist countries didn't have choices....

No..you don't...you can't even replace mobo without reporting to MS - change mobo - Win8 key is gone...

Let's talk about Choices....

I understand what your saying, but I'm not sure why it's a big deal. These are OEM Windows licenses. They've ALWAYS been tied to the motherboard, even if people were able to skirt around it all these years. If the motherboard goes bad within warranty, I'm sure the replacement motherboard will have a key. If it's outside of warranty, that's just the way it goes. These are laptops after all. This is not a new thing.

I don't get the whole "western people" thing. Are you trying to vent some sort of political frustration via a simple technical issue? Buy the laptop or don't buy the laptop. My point is that you're complaining about restore discs that may not even be needed to reinstall your OS.

The BS was with NE, not Lenovo.

It was INDEED Lenovo...not newegg...
Newegg just sells product...Lenovo's responsibility to provide everything - even to tell customers, that in case you want to DIY replace HDD or SSD, customer needs second time to pay for OS - Recovery....

out of principle, not that I couldn't spare another $60, to report this issue to Consumer Affairs and BBB...

Last 2 weeks, I've seen a lot of people frustraited about this:
-People have bought 16G USB sticks just for sake to make a recovery that supposedly works, but doesn't
People purchased SSD's to replace Lenovo HDDs with Win 8 and now, their SSDs sitting idle....

So...where's neweggs fault?

Lenovo...not newegg asked me second time $60 for OS - win8 that came with laptop I've purchased...

If this is so - Im sure somebody soon will create a way to "read" the imbedded key code.

do google about lenovo restore, recovery discs, usb recovery...

I have three Lenovo laptops.

Is there something specific you need me to google? I just read that the Windows 8 key is in the bios. Any Windows 8 install disc can read the license directly and allow installation.

You can get a Windows 8 install disc free from Digital River. You can download all Lenovo software and drivers from them.

In other words, restore discs are nice but completely unnecessary if you end up in a situation where you don't have them. You can swap to an SSD and just do a clean install from the easily acquired Windows 8 install disc from MS.

In my opinion, doing a clean install is preferable to using any restore disc. You're acting like not having the restore disc is crippling. That might have been the case with earlier Windows versions, but not so with 8.

Anyways, I did google it per your suggestion. There are tons of sources that explain exactly what I'm talk about. Bottom line, restore discs are nice but they are completely unnecessary with Windows 8 unless you don't understand how to install an OS. Considering you're talking about replacing motherboards, I'm going to assume you're capable.
