Want to build an extremely cheap PC for 2 games: WoW and TFC

Basically I had to sell my other computer to get a ticket paid off. What I am looking for is something that I will be able to play a very old game on called Team Fortress Classic mostly. Half-Life mod that I ended up falling in love with. The other game I would like it for is World of Warcraft, so that I could play it on Sat. - Sun. Those are really the only two games that have hooked me the 8 years of gaming I think. I have played a lot of other games and they are good, but I just don't think the gameplay is as good as these games. Just my opinion only. I have played DOD:S, CS:S, Quake4, Pain Killer, UT2004, Doom3, AOE III, and the list goes on. I did like Q3A a lot back in the day and I played the demo recently and then I finally found the cd lying around the house. It is also another game I liked. Don't get me wrong I like the newer games, but my attention can't hold onto them like my favorite two. Thus I want to build something that I can play a few of the new games on, but definitely not with all the eye candy. When I get around to some more money then I will build something a lot better but for right now this will hold me for about 2 months.

Now enough with the jibber jabber. What I need is something that will basically run WoW smooth going into big city's. If it is really jumpy it sucks. I am willing to spend a decent bit, but I would rather get something as cheap as possible. PCI-E seems like the way to go now to get a video card and mobo cheap.

I am willing to go to the forums and prefer to do that then buy something new. I will probably not be able to buy the stuff for this till the 15th of this month I am not sure. Just depends on how cheap I can get it.

Thanks for all the help in advance. I have stuff in my mind I just want to see what you guys have to say about this. Hopefully I can get something cheaper then what I am thinking.

My budget will be around $500 hopefully on the 15th of this month (Just depends on how much I will have left after my bills are paid), but if I can go lower preferably a lot lower, I would like to try too.

I need:

  • -Motherboard
    -Video Card
-CPU w/ stock heatsink will be fine
    -1gb ram minimum
    -cd/dvd drive
-case + psu preferably something quiet. Don't need to much cooling at all for this.
-If I have the money I will try and get a monitor/lcd - just depends.

I have:

  • -Speakers
-An old 17" monitor a friend is borrowing I could get back. I sold my 17" LCD for like $80 I think. It was nice too.

I don't need anything that looks cool or nice. Just need something to pass the time by right now.

if you want something incredibly cheap, buy a dell. Theres a point where building your own is not a good deal, and this would be that point.

Coolmaster Centurion Case
Forton 350watts PSU
MSI K8NGM2-L Motherboard
AMD Athlon 64 3000+
Western Digital 80GB Hard Drive
G-Skill 1GB (1x1GB) RAM
XFX Geforce 6800XT
Samsung CD-RW/DVD Combo

Total=$488

If you can get in on that frys combo again with the socket 754 system with the sempron 2800 and ECS Nforce motherboard I'd snatch that up cause it's one of the few ECS boards that are reliable. You can proably obtain one of those from frys or frys outpost for $70 or $80.

Hey check out my listing on eBay for an MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with an A64 3000+ Winchester.. Thermalright XP-90 already with AS5 on it. Soundblaster Audigy and 2 optical drives... All youd need is the ram and a VC... My Buy it Now price... $199 + Sh

As you can see I just bought a $2300 rig (I just asked everyone to rate it) and if you live close to Nashville you can have my Sony 19" Flat Screen CRT for $25!!

In my experience, WoW is an extremely undemanding game. My wife plays it on a complete POS Dell w/ Intel Extreme Graphics and it works fine. You could pick up a decent used computer and be fine for now. If you wanted to build a new computer, you could go for something like:

Mobo (w/ decent integrated graphics): Biostar Geforce 6100 AM2 $74
CPU: Sempron 3400+ AM2 $98
RAM: PQI DDR2 533 2x512 MB $69
Hard drive: Western Digital 80 GB $51
CD burner/DVD drive: Samsung $31
Case: Antec NSK-4400 $88
Keyboard & mouse: Logitech $25
OS: Windows XP OEM $95

Total: $531

A little over $500--sorry. Maybe you could try to find a free keyboard and mouse to get you by for a while.

I would buy some used RAM of the forums. With everyone moving to 2 gigs, 1 can be had for very cheap, $60 or less.
For a motherboard I would get something with integrated video, and an open PCI-E slot, then upgrade to a 7600gt or gs when money became available. Something like this would work.
For a cpu I would get the cheapest 939 Venice 3000+ I could find, you should be able to get one for $90-$100.
For a case and PSU I would get this
And for a DVD drive just something cheap like this would work.
And all you would need is some cheap HD, maybe something like this

Total price if you can get some things used should be around $380, leaving you money for a legit OS or better video.

i thought wow charged money to play online
if a brother got to sell a machine to pay a ticket...
there might be some nice office depot clearances coming up (or not) -- the 3315 (i think) is $399.01 + tax out the door

edit: walmart has a $298.00 emachines EVERY DAY

but for building they own?
a64 3000
asus whatever with nividia integrated + pci-e slot
