I'd like to build a wireless network that can connect to a buddies machine who live's about 400meters from me. I'm wondering what kind of hardware i'd need to do this. There is a small hill between us and i'm hoping that won't be an issue. Can someone get me started in the right direction here as i know squat about wireless networking, the hardware involved or how expensive it might be?

So basically i need to know all the hardware i will need to connect 2 machines.

Ok i'm doing some research here...

I'm thinking i'll need a standard wireless networking kit and maybe one of these?

So one of those and one wireless networking kit like this which consists of a WGT624 router, WG311T PCI adapter, and WG111 USB adapter would be a complete setup for two machines? Would an antenna kit like that one work with just any home networking kit?

To attempt 1200' Wireless Bridging the Antennae have to be outside placed high facing one the other with clear line of sight.

None.

Clear LOS is an absolute (actually LOS + Fresnel Zone).

Unless you have a tall building about halfway (which both would need LOS+) between that you can form a bounce, and you have sufficiently tight antennas, and power (without violating federal law) ....

In other words: none. You won't be able to do it.

Good Luck

Nope. None.

To quote an old banner (from Crosstalk Terminal emulation ~20 years ago....)
" 186,000 miles a second isn't just a good idea, it's the LAW!!

Unless you got some new ideas on warping RF in airspace in which you have no control ...

Good Luck
