Want to build a Server PC

I have been building my home PC for quite a while, however when it comes to workstations and Server PC I still got a lot, and I mean a lot, to learn. I am a casual gamer, and i'm interested in building a server PC for me to host games like Counter-Strike: Source, Unreal Tournament 2k4, and Call of Duty simultaneously. I'm not sure where to start. For instance should I go for an Operton build or a Xeon build. How many RAMS, hard drive space, etc? Any input will be appreciated.

Well, majority of us would like to spend as little as possible 😉. However, I wouldnt mind spending between 2-4k, as long as I can have something stable, you know is a headache to have server crashes in FPS games.

Not to threadjack, but for a game server, am I correct in saying that the graphics card doesn't matter if it's just hosting games and not playing them?

Graphics probably don't matter.
What OS?
I will always say AMD64 based processors are better than Intel procs.
What kind of net connection is this thing going to have?
You can never have enough ram.

Connection wise, I'll have an upload rate of 3-5 Mbps. I know that may be little, but i'm not interested in hosting servers that are have like 40-100 players in one game.

Asus K8N-DL $294
2x Opteron 244 1.8mhz $406
2x Opteron Stock HSF $16
(4x 512) PC-3200 Mushkin REG ECC $358
ATI X300 VGA $56
4x 80gb WD sata 7200rpm $256 (Raid0, or Raid0+1 or Raid5)

That comes to $1386 plus shipping. Add case, PS, DVD rom, etc and a cheap monitor and your well under $2000 for a kickin game server

And check this out

Guide to building and setting up a dedicated game server

Get a opteron dual core instead of the 2x single cores. That way you can drop in another dual core if you want to up the performance.

I would pick up something along the lines of:

Tyan K8WE
One Opteron 270 (Get another one later)
2GB DDR400 ECC Reg (2 X 1GB)
4 X 120GB SATA in RAID 5 or RAID 0+1
Ati x300 or nVidia 6200
2 X Zalman 7000AlCu
Lian Li v2000B
Antec TP2 550W EPS12V.

Everyone seems to always assume that "servers" need to be run using opteron or xeon processors and that isn't always the case depending on what you plan on serving. If I were you, I'd do some testing on a machine you already have to find out how much power you'll actually need before pissing away money. I've hosted a lot of q1 - q3 servers in my time and believe it or not they don't start using up a lot of resources until you start to get over 20 player limits (you mentioned that you were only planning on hosting small servers).

So try hosting your servers on your current machine and monitor cpu load and ram usage. Afterwards you should have a very good idea of what you'll really need to buy.

You're right, you don't really need an opteron or a xeon, but the OP already stated that he wants to spend 2k - 4k, and that price range really belongs to the opteron and xeon. Personally, I would wait until Athlon X2 comes out and pick up one of those, but then there's the waiting factor and we all know that nerds are impatient.

the OP wants to host multiple games at the same time, so the OP may not need a full blown server but will need some decent hardware to have all those games going with a 3-5Mb/s connection. in the past i have hosted a bf:v game with 50ai and 14 real people on a xp2000 w/ 1GB of ram on a 512Kb/s up conection, ran fine but the server usage was high.

yeah i dont understand whre the internet connection is coming from if you plan on hosting....not your own personal cable/dsl connection right?
