How about an ABIT-KT7A ($130); a 1GHz (AXIA) Athlon ($150) which usually can be overclocked to 1.4-1.5GHz; 256MB PC133 SDRAM ($60); 300 watt ATX case with 6 drivebays ($40-$80); a 32MB GeForce2 GTS or a 64MB ATI RADEON ($150 each). Total so far: aroung $550. You can do it no problem.

Of course, I'm Canadian but I'm quoting our dollars converted to US dollars. You'll probably get it even cheaper there.

ya very possible... unless cpu prices have gone up.. you should be able to get a 1gig athlon for 100bucks or less, a 1.2 is like 110 or something, well good luck....

Like every one said, $1000 is def enough.
Since your friend is using it for gaming, make sure the videocard you buy is at least Geforce2 PRO.
You can get a gf2 PRO for pretty cheap now, around $150 or less.
Check at pricewatch.com

You'll also need at least 256MB of RAM, sicne they are so cheap now.

If you have spare money left, don't for get a good set of speakers.
Either klipsch promedia 4.1 or monsoon mm-2000 are good.
I just bought the monsoon, and it's great. I choose monsoon over klipsch because it's was $194 (shipping included), and that's almost $100 less than klpisch 4.1

There's a couple of computer stores in town, but I've never really dealt with either (cept for ocasional misc. small stuff). Would you suggest going with a local store or online???
Thanks again for the advice!

All prices off NewEgg as I type this(all prices include Fed Ex Saver shipping)-

$65.00- Enlight 300Watt ATX case/PS
$100.00- Abit KT7E Motherboard
$89.00- 1GHZ Athlon THunderbird
$42.00- 256MB Kingston PC133 SDRAM(lifetime warranty)
$16.00- Coolermaster EP5-6ill
$353.00- Elsa Gladiac GeForce3
$96.00- 40GB IBM HD
$36.00- 52x Sony CD-ROM
$30.00- Zoom 56K Modem
$49.00- SoundBlaster Live! OEM
$63.00- Altec Lansing ACS54 5 piece speaker system
$11.00- Mitsumi Floppy drive
$29.00- MS Natural Elite Keyboard
$19.00- Logitech Optical Mouse

$1,000.00 total

Clearly this cuts back on a few things here and there, but as a graphics/gaming machine you have a GHZ Athlon, 256MB RAM and a GeForce3. Also, this is all through NewEgg and is calculated as if you ordered every part one at a time(don't know if they combine shipping to reduce prices or not?).
