Want to build a cheap computer

i know there's a sticky on this forum about which computers to build, but work with me here.

i'm using a computer i built in 2003... it essentially serves as a file server but worked pretty well until i started encountering issues (and for me, when it rains, it pours). one HDD died, so i got a new one, but then for whatever reason, my CPU fan died after i installed the HDD, the CPU overheated, and yeah, i'm without a CPU! woot!

so anyway...

i'm considering doing an AFFORDABLE upgrade ($500 max? i don't really know--let's just say i DONT want to do this). i don't need high end, but i want decent operating components.

THE CATCH: i'm still dependent upon 6 IDE hard drives. in fact, if i get a case that accommodates more hard drives, i will want to put those 6 IDEs in the case too...
(I do have a Promise Ultra100TX2 controller card)

* my preferred mobo would have
- diagnostic lights so i can figure out wtf is wrong when something goes wrong--if this has to be from an external bracket enclosure or something, so be it.
- 2 IDE connectors (this is the hard part)
- at least 2 PCI slots (PCI-E and PCI are interchangeable, correct?)

i'm also considering a new case (i'm coming from a Thermaltake V1000A, which is an awesome case with some features i can't find anywhere else) but again, some catches:
- i need a side window! (you probably don't recall but i posted on ATOT like 3248834 years ago ... erm, 2004, when my mobo spontaneously combusted. i want to make sure i can see what's going on inside at all costs)
- it'd be cool if it can monitor the CPU temperature too
- thumbscrews?
- removable hard drive bays (remember i have 6 IDE hard drives i don't want to part with)
HERE'S the official description for the case I used to have: http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/...Case/xaser3/v1000a.htm
(check out the hard drive enclosure thingy more closely: pic1, pic2, pic3 - see? it snaps right in! so easy...)

i prefer an AMD processor, so that should make things cheaper.

so... what do you guys think? what should i get? how can i get it cheap? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

parts needed:
- mobo
- cpu
- PSU i guess...my old enermax doesnt seem like it'd work :(
- case
- grfx card (unless i can get onboard that's decent. i really don't care. i have a DVI/VGA monitor)
- ram
...and i'll find a cheap SATA drive for booting into too.
...anything else?!

Only (decent) board I could find with 2xIDE, good combo savings with a C2D processor as well.

Single 320GB platter design means fast. I use one as a boot drive in an older computer and it rocks. HDTach had it at like 100 MB/s sustained, not bad.

thanks! i didn't realize PCI and PCI-E aren't interchangeable though, so that mobo won't work especially since i am planning on using my Ultra133 TX2 promise controller card :( are there any IDE+PCI+PCI-E mobos out there? :( this is tough....

Well, the first motherboard I posted has 2xIDE, and 3 PCI slots. Intel integrated graphics isn't exactly the best, but it has a PCI-E slot for a video card.

ok... another option (and one i can't find affordably) is just to find an enclosure that i can access via USB (preferably 1 or 2.. i don't want 6) to store the IDE hard drives so i can access them easily, via USB or something. i have a lot of important data (2TB+) there, so i don't mind going all new within the box itself but then just figuring out how to keep my IDE drives intact... and no, i don't want to dedicate a current case to this (i just want something small)

then i can get the high-end mobo+processor unit and not have to worry about being a legacy adopter :D

any ideas?

and and ... assuming i go with this (i think it's a good choice - thermaltake recommended it as well, thanks ;) ): http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16811133056

it comes with a free CPU ..Free X2 BE-2300 AMD CPU ... what's a good mobo for that?

i seriously have no experience building computers anymore. tis why i work in marketing now. heh

You'd need to get a CPU cooler to go with it since it's OEM. I just used one of these on an HTPC build, and it's a pain to get on, but it works fine: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16835233022

Multi-bay external enclosures are all SATA, at least the nice ones. I managed to find one IDE one: http://www.buy.com/prod/addoni...loc/101/203421992.html

I used one of these to build my dad a workstation, nice solid board:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131325

Fancier version: http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813131331

Both have 3x PCI slots.

ok cool. thanks. this looks good :)

now assuming i can use that external IDE/USB case, i might just need a mobo with one IDE slot port for CD/DVD (w/onboard video)
and RAM... and a good PSU (does the one above work in my system?)

do you have alternative mobo recommendations considering this?

and then i'm set, i think. thanks mrSHEiK - you da man!

May be you can adopt a new year resolution.

Get rid of the 6 Drives. With the price and performance of current 1TB drives there is rarely a reason to carry 6 IDE drives around the neck. ". ;)

JackMDS, keep up with the thread :p I'm actually considering dropping it at this point.

back to what I need:
considering a X2 BE-2300 AMD CPU, i'm looking for a good mobo that has onboard video in addition to a compatible PSU, and of course, I'll need RAM. ;)

that's it!

soooooooo what are the recommendations? ;)

The RAM, PSU work fine for both configurations. If you go with the free AMD X2, either of the last two motherboard choices I posted (ASUS M3A78 Pro, ASUS M3A78-T) is good. Remember to get a CPU cooler because it's an OEM CPU Text.

How true.

1 TB, cheaper than that silly enclosure you're looking at, and you can still technically use 4 of your drives (2x using onboard IDE port, and 4x using your 2x IDE card).

If you're worried about using up IDE and not leaving any for an optical drive, just get a nice Pioneer SATA DVD burner, lol Text

I posted a 750W PC Power and Cooling PSU because I thought you were going to be using eleventy hard drives. If we're going to scale down in that department, this works nicely:

The awesome overkill CPU heatsink/fan. You'll be able to overclock the crap out of that BE-2300 with this, or run it at room temperature, your pick :p

that 1TB is on sale for $99.99 today too - see http://promotions.newegg.com/N...g29/index-landing.html ;) it's already in my cart. i hope WD's warranty is good!

the question is more along the lines of: should i stick with that mobo or should i get something better? (and do the ones specified have diagnostic lights? i don't mind if i have to plug that into a PCI slot)

Those ASUS boards do not have diagnostic lights. That's usually a DFI thing, see here:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16813136058

You'll need a graphics card though. DFI decided to be silly and not put any video outputs on a board with onboard video

For the graphics card, if you just want to see your desktop, make Aero work, etc, just go with that 7200GS Newegg has for $24.99 with FS (on that deal link of yours).

What processor are you going with? Just going to pay the $30 for the BE-2300?

Check Amazon, Buy, etc. for the case, sometimes they have them with free shipping

EDIT: Buy has it for $220 shipped, better than the 204+30something newegg wants

oops - forgot to link to the CPU.

i decided instead to go with this
AMD Athlon X2 BE-2350 Brisbane 2.1GHz Socket AM2 45W Dual-Core Processor Model ADH2350IAA5DO - OEM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16819103647

i whined to newegg's tech support that they reneged the deal mid-promotion and they said they'd take half off of the cost of the CPU, so i'm paying $204+17.50 which is better, i suppose, given it's a better processor (albeit OEM).

what is the best processor that goes with this mobo? i really haven't kept up with my hardware in the past 5 years, hence my newbieish questions :)

Best? As in fastest? Phenom II 940.

I've paired a bunch of AMD Athlon X2 4850e CPUs with similar boards though, great for budget office computing, HTPC, etc. Your BE-2350 is just a lower clocked OEM version (2.3 GHz vs. 2.5 GHz, no biggie).

In other news: http://www.monoprice.com/produ...p?c_id=104&cp_id=10407

ha, well i dunno if my PSU will even have molex connectors. do new PSUs come equipped with that stuff any longer? ;)

i feel like i might as just well take the entire SATA route and go IDE via USB only... but um, maybe i'll consider a few of those connectors for the fun of it :D

and isn't the BE 2350 better than the BE 2300? looks to me like the former is 2.1 GHz while the 2300 is a 1.9 GHz.
