Want to add credits and text to my movie

Well, my buds and I made a cheesey movie and I'd like to add some text to it. Can VirtualDub do this? Are there any other freeware programs that can? (IE: I'd like to display a persons name while they are in the shot)

VirtualDub is a video processor and not a video editor. Big difference there.

Unfortunately there really isn't anything on the freeware side of the wall that would do what you are looking for.
