My opinion is this system sucks!!!

Why might you ask....

Reason is this system not oc'd and not tweak one bit will crash running Folding at Home about every 4 days with a blue screen (requiring a pull the battery and unplug restart) where it says something about system parity.....every 4 days. So since I have had this about 6-7 crashes....

I have had my X2 longer oc'd 466mhz and ram in the 500+ddr and haven't had it crash yet. My folding boxes have all been oc'd to the hilt and they go months without a restart or crash...

So what is it?? Dell cant make a stable system???

I have power settings to always with hibernate disabled when plugged in...so it should run 24/7 folding at home when it is sitting on my desk plugged in. Every other system in the house flies along no problem...except this one....

Dont get me wrong the 6800go card kicks and this thing will plays games very nicely on the 17" widescreen for my son non stop for hours....Just as a folder it sucks....As a regular CAD system it leaves something to be desired as well coming from AMD64 systems....even with 2gb of ram....I htink the 5400rpm drive is really hampering me during loadups but should have nothing to do with slow regen times...

you think it's a mem issue? got any spare laptops DIMM's around to test and see if they run any better?

either that, or maybe a crappy Windows install....

or you could be right, Dell might just have built u crap...

:)

Well, the Dell laptops at work are constantly dying and crashing... My sons new Compaq with a Turion64 is doing great though. And I don;t think its the cpu, but laptops aren't great at 24/7 opteration, not enough cooling. And my old laptop is almost dead (AMD something 550) because the fan is noisey. Doesn;t crash, but very noisey. Can you replace laptop fans ???

Did you do the standard Dell ritual of formatting the whole damn thing and reinstalling it yourself? My dell 700M with a 1.6GHz Dothan was buggy as hell until I cleared the whole thing out. Now it's very zippy.

Is there any way to monitor the temps on that thing? Also, does it have a fan/vent on the bottom? If it does, you could try elevating it above the desk to see if the aditional airflow makes it not crash, which would proove that it is overheating and that dell is incapable of making a notebook. If they can't keep a Pentium M from overheating, I am afraid to see what one of the Pentium 4 notebooks looks like.

Well... it seems quite logical for me; it is obvious that such a cost-concious company as Dell will not invest in high quality components that can be overclocked or even tweaked a bit. Voltage resistors, and other power-related components come to mind on guessing why it performed badly when overclocked.

I've used some SONY and HP Pentium M laptops, and am far from being impressed, too... however the ACER Ferrari computer... well... that's another story... and I'm just waiting for some price drops on Turion 64 laps to get my own.

I think you misread it. He's saying that un-overclock and un-tweaked, the thing still crashes.

My eMachines Athlon 64 laptop has been great except for a cracked hinge which was fixed in 4 days (including shipping at NO cost to me), running Folding@Home 24\7 since January 2004, even overclocked 200MHz. This is with the original Windows XP installation, I just disabled and uninstalled a LOT of stuff.
