Hi all

I got a desktop recently and my config is

Q6600 2.4 Ghz Quad core 8MB
Intel G33BU Motherboard with intel onboard graphics
4 GB DDR II 800Mhz RAM
500 GB SATA 7200 rpm drive
LG DVD Burner

I want to get a video card because my desktop performance is I feel sluggish when it comes to loading of videos, photos and scrollong of long pages which have graphics. Im not sure if this is happening because of the intergrated graphics so was wondering if you guys could chip in and suggest something. Gaming is not a priority at all. I have no interest in PC games for now.

Basically I want my computer to be fast, fluid and smooth.

Any suggestions would be greatly welcome

It basically comes down to your hard drive sub system, and memory sub system. Video cards or GPUs has nothing to do with this.

Unlike what most users believe, just because one machine can crunch benchmarks like theres no tomorrow doesn't necessarily translate into a more "fluid" or responsive experience when using it for day to day tasks. This all depends on just fast different components in your PC communicates with each other.

Vista or XP? If XP, there's probably something else going on. If Vista, and you're trying to use Aero, at least pick up a x1300 PCI card. Whatever card, just make sure it's Directx 9 compliant (the majority of cards out there).

If it's LOADING you want faster, you should get a new hard drive; if your videos load fine but skip when they play, then you'll need a new video card.

if you bought it as a prebuilt from like hp or dell, then it probably came with chock full of system-hogging applications. that bloat can slow a system down pretty bad.

getting a new video card wont really help pictures and video load faster

1. Processor - 5.9
2. RAM - 5.5
3. Graphics - 1
4. Gaming Graphics - 1
5. Primary Hard Disk - 5.7

That motherboard has a PCI-e slot, so grab a cheap 7200GS and you'll be fine since you're not interested in PC gaming. It is cheap enough (less than $30) that if you want to upgrade down the line for gaming you won't feel like you're throwing money away.

If you are going to spend $30 then it might aswell be a 3450 which can be had for a little over $24 and excellent HD decoding to boot.

Hmm....The Graphics and Gaming scores are wayy too low. Do you have drivers installed for your graphic card??

The onboard GMA 950 in my laptop gets a better score than that something like 3.1 for both.

If you don't have the drivers installed the score is 1 for any card as Windows runs it with generic drivers.

Another thing, my onboard GMA 950 runs the Aero reasonably smooth, no need for a discrete card just for Aero.

Have to agree with ashishmishra you must not have the graphics drivers installed. Check the driver cd's that came with your mobo for the correct drivers...
Although getting yourself a cheapo SAPPHIRE 3450 will still be MUCH better than the gma950 (especially with regard to hd video).

SAPPHIRE 100233L Radeon HD 3450 256MB - $19.99 AR:

do unprotected home 1080p hd videos benefit from this? I see the 3450 is HDCP compliant.

You need power dvd & an app which can use the the power dvd codecs for hardware acceleration of x264 mkv's. I use mediaportal with xp pro & that works great for me with my 1080p mkv's.
