History

We have a scanning system that is hooked up to our network at work. This system is currently monitored by external software. The external monitor displays aggregate scans each hour. It takes about 2 hours for a system outage to be noticeable on the external monitor. If only part of the system is down it is virtually undetectable due to the aggregate nature of the reporting. 2 hours is not an acceptable timeframe.

Currently

We are Beta testing a "new" way of monitoring using SolarWinds "Watch It". We monitor the network connections which display green when good and red when bad. This is a huge improvement because the display is easy to interpret and the results appear in just a minute or so. Each part of the system can be monitored independently so a partial outage is easy to spot.

The trouble with both systems is that someone needs to be actively monitoring 24/7 and ain't nobody got time for that. We all have many other job responsibilities besides this one small system.

"Watch It" seems to include an option for an audible alert which is exactly what we need but there are no sounds populating what should be a list of sound choices. I don't know if the software is goofed up or if I just don't have the proper authority with my login to make this thing work correctly. I checked out SolarWinds forum but couldn't find much on point. I suspect we are running an old obsolete version that is no longer supported.

I'm just a low level technician with no authority to purchase anything so whatever the solution is it must be free.

Ideally actual scans would be monitored instead of just network connectivity but this is beyond my level of understanding.

Any ideas?

Fixed! It was a path problem. For some reason the sounds were one directory level higher than they needed to be and the proper folder was missing all together. Added "sounds" folder and populated said folder with WAVs. Works!
