I bought my eVGA 7800 GT about less than a year ago, and now, wanting to upgrade to SLI I cant seem to find 7800 GT's on the market.

Do I have to have the same type/brand card for SLI? If so, where can I find one?

If not, which card can i stick next to my current setup for SLI to work?

TIA

You need one of the same model. So you can use a BFG 7800gt with an eVGA 7800gt in SLI, but not a 7800gt and a 7800gtx. Im pretty sure you will only get them second hand now, because they are not manufactured anymore.

That's why I always felt it silly to use SLI as a future upgrade - if that future is in the next 6 months then fine... otherwise bad idea because video cards have a 6 month product refresh.

Yes, I agree with this.

The 7800GT was great when it first came out, but soon after the 7900GT came out for about the same price and outperformed it by a good margin. There really hasn't been a reason to buy 7800's since then. If you take the money you plan to buy another 7800 with, and add to it the money you'd get from selling your current 7800, I wager you could buy a rather powerful single GPU that would smoke SLI'd 7800's.

7800GT, for $160. Recertified by evga, another option is ebay of course. You'll get a good performance boost, although as others suggested buying a faster single card would be better, just much more expensive. iirc, 7800gt in sli is about equal to a 7900gtx in most games.
