Want a small notebook/laptop to stick some *nix flavour on

As topic title says, I'm looking for a really small laptop, (12.1" isn't it?) just to have for internet browsing etc. Thought I'd put linux or some such on it to hopefully get some more performance for my buck.

Unfortunately, I have not paid any attention to the notebook market at any point, so I have no idea how much things cost and so on.

Is it a given with a second hand laptop that the battery is probably going to be shot?

Any links/suggestions would be appreciated.

I'm in the UK aswell, in case ebay links come up...
