The link above is BY FAR the best bang for buck in the industry for under $500. It ends 1/7/04. You get a $400 digital receiver (that beats receivers over $1k) for $100 and a system that blows away any B&M HTIB package. For $500 it's a literal STEAL!!! The company above makes amazing stuff thousands of dollars off retail since they manufacture in China. They have a huge loyal following among many enthusiasts and audiophiles.

HSU VT-12

The VT-12 system above is also great and can compete with the Tykes. One magazine gave them the same 9/10 rating. The VT-12 system is an AMAZING value and raved by many audiophiles. The subs HSU makes are some of teh very best in the industry for several hundred less.

...............Both the Hsu and Tyke systems will wipe the floor with ANY Bose $2000+ system--EASILY! Anything aside of these $500 systems and you'll be selling yourself short.....Waaaaay short! 😉

had a look at the equipment, for the speakers i cant comment, never heard anything made by the company so wouldnt be right to say anything. As for the receiver, hmmm, u have to wonder why they are happy to give that away so cheap, presumably part of its because the speakers are made extremely dirt cheap and the drivers arnt likely to last long with protracted use, or because that receiver is a bit crap, oh i know its specs look good, its got pretty much the same as the Denons (SHARC proc, 100w per channel, 24/96 etc) but just becuase its got the gear doesnt mean its put together right. Being honest i would never spend money on hifi without hearing it first, or knowing that i can send it back if i dont like it, even at that price level. (my 1st home theatre setup cost about £500, which is around $850 but as you guys get stuff cheaper than we do in general i would say its closer to $500 anyhow. That got me a Sherwood DD/DTS 5.1 65wpc receiver, JVC DVD player, Wharfedale Diamond 7.3 floorstanders, Gale Centre 60, Mission 700 bookshelfs as rears and a Eltax subwoofer......if you shop around and find older model stuff u can get some damn good bargains......that lot i bought was around 4 years ago btw)

I've bought 2 box sets, and while i know they're not the highest quality around, they get me by with no complaints, i hear the surround, i feel the bass. For what it is, you'll get by

btw, for the OP, if u can hang around a bit, my advice would be to try and track down a Denon 2803, the model isnt in production but u might find a last one in stock somewhere, it won awards left right and centre for being astounding in its price bracket with both music and movies, i auditioned my speakers on it in the shop i got them from and said 'im coming back for that receiver in a few months'
ok so i lied, i came back, but got the 3803 as its got more wattage which my speakers could do with, plus a few little extras, but then it does cost almost 50% more...lol
That will probably take up around 2/3 of your budget, but if u hang around a little longer and build up some more cash then u can get some speakers to go with it 🙂

It's a $500 receiver. Dell sells it for $400. AV123 will give it for $100 with the speaker purchase. They still make really good money b/c their speakers are made in their own Chinese factory. The parts they use are always best in class at their price-points--no heavy B&M or middleman mark-up. The cost is passed to the consumer.

You can return the Tykes if you don't like them. They have a very good return policy.

I've never seen anyone complain about any of the Rocket products in the 4 audiophile forums that I frequent. All the products get raves..

Here's a typical Tyke Rave.

Bose are overpriced crap......like Sony.....sure they sound ok and have reasonable build quality, and obviously looks arnt bad (due to them spending lots of money on designer companies) but how many times do Bose or Sony win awards online or in magazines dedicated to these things.....very rarely! You are just paying for the name and nothing more!
If you read a wide enough spread of magazines so you can do away with the bias opinions of the writers (either due to underhand sponsorship or general personal preference) you will find that Denon & Yamaha are the main contenders in the budget level and medium level stakes (budget = £0-£1,500, medium level = £1,500-£3,000. this is per piece of equipment). For top range kit u need companies like Tag Maclaren, Musical Fidelity, ArCam, Linn, Mark Levinson, to name a few. These boys go from £3,000 to WAAAAY higher..lol.

Being honest, DD and DTS in their current forms are likely to remain the stock favourites for DVD films for the next 5 years. To dispel a mistake some people make, even though you see lots of speakers lining the walls in cinemas, they are still only using a 5.1 or 6.1 soundtrack, just hooking lots of speakers up to one channel. So getting your receiver now wont make much difference really. And if you spend more on the receiver your standard stereo reproduction will be better too....another reason to recommend Denon, at the price point they are good on normal CD stuff.

One thing i will say, if you can find a dealer in USA selling them, check out Monitor Audio speakers, they look very good and sound bewdiful......they have some cheaper range stuff, both satellite size and normal bookshelf/standmounter, as well as higher end floorstanders.

my own system took me 2 years to put together and sounds gorgeous both with music and films, Denon 3803 surround amp, a somewhat bigger brother to the 1804 mentioned earlier, DVD player im about to upgrade, currently using a cheapo one i won at work...lol, speakers are Monitor Audio Silver range, S6 floorstanders, SLCR centre, SFX bi/dipolar surrounds, REL Quake 100E subwoofer (which will get upgraded to their Strata 5 sometime in the new year). Total cost once i've done the DVD and subwoofer upgrades will be around £4,500 (US$7,500 give or take) BUT you guys get techno stuff cheaper than us Brits usually, so i would imagine you would be paying around US$5,000 at the most for all i've got/getting)

Final note, dont go cheap on the subwoofer, many cheap ones are just bassboxes, they dont hit subbass levels, u want it to go down to 25Hz, although the LFE .1 channel only hits 40hz itself, there is still low bass on a DVD in the form of music. This also means your CDs will play to their true potential, u'd be surprised how many artists use low bass you never realised existed, from classical to hip hop, rock to R&B. Also needs to run with an 8in woofer minimum & 100watts, also u need both high and low level connections (low level for LFE and high level for stereo sound)

scuse the length of my post, im at work and INSANELY bored....heh...typing passes the time..lol
The better audio review magazines don't even touch Bose, for fear of litigation.

Onkyo System will be nice for a starter system. I bought one w/ Dolby Pro-logic and laserdiscs waaay back in '95. Did me good for several years. Be patient and eventually you'll upgrade to better things. Like me. Rotel pre/pro & amp, B&W CDMNT spkrs & Def Tech Sub.

I can't help but to chip in my two cents on one of my favorite topics. Personally I try and save as much as I can afford for a particular component then I go out and buy it. Granted I am in a continual upgrade cycle for some of my equipment but it really doesn't bother me. I have a subwoofer (Paradigm PDR-10) and receiver (Harman Kardon AVR-230) that I won't need to replace anytime real soon. I am gradually upgrading the other speakers but for now they aren't too bad. The approach I would recommend is to buy the best components you can afford and make sure that you can upgrade. So you could go with an HTIB solution but be sure that the receiver could drive any future speakers that you upgrade to in the future.

dr150, if they let u return simply because your not satisfied then its worth buying from them. If your happy with the sound then thats a good price 🙂
