Want a network storage system, newbie

Ok, I need a recommendation. I don't need anything huge, as I will be streaming mkv's only occasionally, and xvids most of the time. I have a 16kbps connection and haven o problem streaming HD so that is not a problem. And this storage system will be connected to the router. And all of the devices I will be streaming video to will be connected to the router as well. Here's what I want to be able to do. Be able to connect some USB external HDDs or even internal HDDs via Sata. Doesn't matter how it gets done. I also want to be able to mount these hard drives to network drives so I can access them anywhere on the network. Like I said, I'm not looking for something real expensive, actually something real cost affordable. I assume this would require a NAS system, but I was hoping for something cheaper.

I don't want to use a HTPC, don't really want to have to connect it a PC, just access it remotely via my laptop.

I personally use a Thecus NAS box. Not sure what your budget is though, if you want a good solid unit, it's going to cost a few hundred at the low end.

qnap is solid. i backup 60 machines a night to a single unit. full backups no incrementals. alot of weaker machines can't handle the load and just reboot randomly. that is useless. atom based board. powered by 4 RE4 2TB WD drives. solid. very solid.

that wasn't my question. do you want the data on the server to go through any sort of backup/parity?

nto really, this stuff isn't that big of a deal that i'm backing up.

i've narrowed it down to the linkstations. wondering which ones i could get that would be able to run sabnzbd and sickbeard without it bogging down.

anybody have any experience in them?
