Want a file server

I recently got an old Gateway. It's got a Celeron and RAM (can't remember how much), but I want to turn it into a file server. Nothing external yet, just inside my network. Should I go Fedora (which I know how to use and love), or XP (which I for sure know how to use)? I've got Fedora 4 on there now, and I can't connect to it via my laptop's wifi with Samba on the box. Should I just switch to XP, or can I fix what I have? Any quick tutorials/hints you guys could give me? Thanks

I use debian for my fileserver, it's got a much smaller footprint than fedora or xp, but i suppose any linux is better than xp for this sort of thing.

What happens when you try to connect to samba? Does the problem occur _only_ on the wireless?

From Windows, nothing happens. It just says that it can't find the server. It won't show up in the "map network drive" either, so I've been doin it by IP.
