Want a Dodge Dart? Might wanna pay for more than just the base model

Chrysler today announced the prices for the 2013 Dodge Dart, it's belated and much anticipated re-entry into compact cars, with the base level starting at $15,995 before a $795 delivery charge -- a number that undercuts similar models from Ford, Chevrolet and Honda. Just don't expect to find any Darts getting thrown off dealer lots at that price.

Why? When automakers say "base model," they mean it: The 2013 Dodge Dart SE bargain-basement model requires drivers to shift their own gears and open their doors not with a remote fob but with a physical key, like our ancestors did. And like many base models, the SE doesn't include air conditioning standard, making them unfriendly places to visit half the year.

The real reason there aren't many such stripper models on the road is that most buyers don't want them. Several automakers say small-car shoppers aren't bargain hunting, but buying the most fully-equipped models available. Most offer a range of compact cars that top out well above $20,000 -- and the Dart R/T, at $22,495, will include everything from the hottest 184-hp engine available in the line to leather seats and a heated steering wheel. (Air conditioning is standard, too.)
Hehe, no A/C, manual entry AND transmission. Now that's what I call a base model! :awe:

Too bad they didn't go with a classic Dart style.

My girlfriend in college had a dodge dart swinger with the 318. Fun fun car to drive, white with a green vinyl top.

Might as well take off the seats while they're at it too right? 😀

I had a stripped Focus. It had AC. That was pretty much it.
Now I have auto/power everything.
I don't think I would terribly miss the features.
They are nice, but not necessary. To me, A/C is.
Not too many Focus' were sold like this. Not many Darts will either.
I looked for the Focus I wanted for a few weeks.

Manual transmission >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> automatic.

Now, no AC or power locks is a little silly in this day and age.

On a car like this I'd take auto any day over manual.

the only things i really need in a car are AC and Cruse Controll, i can put my own stereo in, everything else is just fluf IMO

no power locks is a bit strange, i can see not having a FOB but my 88 volvo and 92 tempo both had power locks

Why? You are backwards!

I would take a manual over the automatic any day!

If I was just going to use it as a commuter or running around town I'd prefer an automatic. The enjoyment of a manual transmission is lost when you're spending your time in stop and go traffic or going from stoplight to stoplight.

Yup. Can't agree more. I drove stick for years, but finally ditched it when I realized that I spent more time in 1st and second than actually enjoying the stick. Maybe when I move to the French countryside. . .

I'm the opposite.
I'd rather have a stick in traffic than zone out in an automatic.
I know I'm in the minority. Most people just want to something that can accelerate faster than the person next to them while they listen to the radio\ read the paper\apply make up.
Plus, driving stick makes it REALLY hard to drive and talk on the cell phone.

I dont think GM and FORD even sell cars w/o AC anymore

more bottom price wards. look our car costs 500 less than theirs! but we dont give you cruise, power locks(now no remote != no power locks), or AC!!

all I really need is cruise, AC, and power locks(remote not required but appreciated)

power windows are nice and all.....but they suck when they fail

And I went out of my way last year just to find a new 6 sp manual car. Now give me that Dart with only the big engine upgrade and I'd be all over it!

I just don't think I can ever bring myself to owning a dodge ever again (nightmares keep popping up about my old dodge daytona), but I do like this car.
