Chrysler today announced the prices for the 2013
Dodge Dart, it's belated and much anticipated re-entry into compact cars, with the base level starting at $15,995 before a $795 delivery charge -- a number that undercuts similar models from
Ford,
Chevrolet and
Honda. Just don't expect to find any Darts getting thrown off dealer lots at that price.
Why? When automakers say "base model," they mean it: The 2013 Dodge Dart SE bargain-basement model requires drivers to shift their own gears and open their doors not with a remote fob but with a physical key, like our ancestors did. And like many base models, the SE doesn't include air conditioning standard, making them unfriendly places to visit half the year.
The real reason there aren't many such stripper models on the road is that most buyers don't want them. Several automakers say small-car shoppers aren't bargain hunting, but buying the most fully-equipped models available. Most offer a range of compact cars that top out well above $20,000 -- and the Dart R/T, at $22,495, will include everything from the hottest 184-hp engine available in the line to leather seats and a heated steering wheel. (Air conditioning is standard, too.)
