Hey, sorry for the bother, I bet yall get this alot.

Anyways, my little brother needs a computer, so I am going to give him my old parts. I am thus going to upgrade to a new motherboard, CPU, and graphics card. I want to order real soon.

I did a little research, and concluded that a good combination would simply be, all ordered from newegg.com:

1. ASUS V9280TD GF4 4200. It is $150, and has the faster memory chips. I am hoping to get it to 4600 like speeds. I realize there that prices are going to drop alot on graphics cards when the new GFFX and R350s hit the streets, but I cant wait. I figure this will hold me over till the next iteration.

2. ASUS A7N8X motherboard. NF2, and won Anand's top choice. $115. Seems pretty reasonable.

3. AMD 1700+ Thouroughbred processor. Like $50. Hopefully good overclocking.

Anybody think this is drastically wrong for any reason? Like "you can get an MSI NF2 motherboard for 69.99 at _______" or anything similar?

Thanks for any input. I am ready to order.

Looks good, but I would put in an extra $30 on the video card and get a Radeon 9500 Pro (Sapphire one). You get DirectX 9 support and it's faster 🙂

Also, be aware of the differences between the $115 A7N8X and the $145 A7N8X-Deluxe: the differences For overclocking, an EPoX 8RDA or 8RDA+ might be even better. 8RDA+ has Firewire, an additional 2-port USB outlet plate, and the nVidia 5.1 audio (no digital-out jacks, just analog). 8RDA has standard 2-channel audio.

its funny how whenever someone suggests a geforce 4, someone else suggests the 9500pro, even though it is more than the ti-4200. i have a ti-4200 and couldnt be happier. the 4200 is a great card, you wont be dissapointed

Thanks for the help guys.

mechBgone, I am aware of the more stripped down nature of the cheaper motherboard. I'm ok with that, I don't think I'd use those things ever 🙂... thanks

Raynor, is that 9500 pro at newegg, or where can I find it for that price? I'm looking now.

Dunno how far the 9500 pro can overclock, but I hear good overclocking potential for the ASUS 4200.

Seems like it will be really close between those two....

Thanks again.

EDIT:

Raynor, found it at newegg.com for $180.

Seems interesting. But then, why not go just $50 further and get a 9700 (non-pro) with twice the memory bandwidth?!?!?!

Oh, the delima!

Call,

I really am not. I am building him a system based on my old parts, and ordering me ALL NEW PARTS. I just didn't wanna bother yall with the boring stuff (hard drive, memory, etc.)

Thanks again all!

Its better not to cannabalize. Build a brand new system. Its a lot better that way.

I've cannabalized for the past 5-6 years. Nothing wrong with it.

Where did I say that the Ti4200 was a bad card? I simply stated that IMHO the features + perf boost from the 9500 Pro over the Ti4200 is a worth $30.

SaltyNutsWith regards to the 9700, it's really a budget decision at this point. I personally wouldn't spend an extra $50 to get the 9700, but it's your money and they're your games (I'm a cheap ass on video cards personally, I always buy 1 gen old cards since they always run everything nicely and don't break the bank).
