Need a new mobo, cpu, ram & hdd - I see a "ECS Socket A K7S5A SiS® 735 chipset motherboard with On-Board LAN Port" on Newegg for $35 (refurb) and I suppose I could put that together with a duron. Any ideas? I'd like something that will crunch seti fast but not break the bank. Anyone know what kinda procs this board will support?
Other combos are welcome too! Thx.
(I'm going to look on the FS forum here too.)

personaly I would go with the xp1600($54 newegg) for about $15 more than a duron 1.1. especially if you don't want to "reset" the multiplyer on the duron(so you can run 133 fsb).

for 35 the ecs is a pretty good deal IMHO. I picked a couple up myself.:)

crucial is selling ddr2100 128MB sticks for $36-free shipping but you might have to pay tax. you can find chaeper memory but generic mem in the ecs board is kinda risky.;)(kinda risky in any mb I think)

Marrkks - was that ECS mobo from newegg a v 1.x or 3.x? The difference being that the 1.x supposedly can't take XP chips.

Thanks!

I have the K7S5A with the XP1600+ that's on sale at Newegg and it puts out around 6 or so a day, just depends on how much I use the computer. That's with 384 megs of Crucial PC133. Dunno how it would do with DDR, I haven't broken down and bought any yet.

You could look at the ECS L7SOM and a low cost Duron or Athlon 1600. The L7SOM has integrated video, audio and lan but crunches faster than the K7S5A. The make great crack rack boards, but I would think they would also work very well for a low cost PC :)

I have a K7S5A that I have had for quite some time. According to the ESC website, both versions will support up to an XP2100. You may need to update the bios to get it to support the higher chips. I am running mine with an XP1600 and am getting ready to put an XP2000 in it.

CPU Support for ECS Socket A Motherboards

I am also getting ready to buy another K7S5A for my son's computer. Upgrading it from a Duron 850 to an XP2000....think he will see a performance increase? ;)

I have a couple of them also. One is running an 1700xp and the other has a 1600xp both works great. If you want to overclock you will have to use a hacked bios from someplace like overclockers.com. The default bios hasn't any setting for overclocking

I am running cheepobios right now and was able to overclock. It works pretty good.

Here is a thread about cheepobios and overclocking with the K7S5A: http://forum.ocworkbench.com/ocwbcgi/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=27&t=003724
