You don't. That's their flaw as a form of ID. Hell, we wouldn't even be able to limit their use to appropriate government authorities, and the incentive for abuse (government, commercial, corporate, criminal, and otherwise) is simply too strong. Sorry if I snapped a little, but this seems obvious to me (and to most people).

edit: as just a small example, do you really want your drivers license and social security information on the same RFID chip that holds your bank and credit account information and medical histories? A police officer pulls you over, goes to access your driving record, gets your bank account, and decides to give you the ticket because you can afford it. You go to the bank for a loan and they deny you on the basis that you have terminal cancer. Oh yeah, this is a Brave New World!

It's okay, no harm done 🙂 It wasn't obvious to me; I just starting looking at RFID stuff this morning (hence the thread & discussion). That is a huge point that I overlooked though...there's no way for you to control what's read off your chip.

But wouldn't it be cool to have a built-in 2-gig memory stick? You'd never have to worry about misplacing your USB memory stick again :laugh:

I mentioned it because I didn't understand what Vic meant, I thought he was comparing it to having a standardized ID, not to the way in which it was implemented. An implanted chip is a lot different than a plastic card, I get what he is saying now 😉

I don't think they consider it a flaw, and I can only hope that the evil a chip like this could bring IS obvious to most people, but I doubt 90% of the population considers the extenuating consequences of it. I'll tell you this though, the day they pass a law requiring current citizens to be chipped is the day I move to Canada (hopefully I won't be too tied down with a family and job at that point).

I think there's something to be said for *too* much technology - there needs to be room for gray area, otherwise the system would become an eye-for-an-eye and a tooth-for-a-tooth 😛

I dunno, it seems like it'd be awfully expensive and complex. Everyone would need a chip. There would need to be massive databases to keep track of them as well as really good security to keep them hacker-proof (which is impossible as far as I can tell...).

I have a credit card that has rfid embedded, you need to hold it very close to the detector to use it, and it kinda confuses the cashier sometimes 😛 I rarely use it for that purpose though, more of a novelty, it's also limited to small transactions.

I'd have one implanted if I knew that it was 100% secure AND I must be able to turn it off. I can't see a wireless chip like that ever being 100% secure with any kind of encryption, but in conjunction with biometrics like iris or hand scan it could work.

Yeah, I have a SpeedPass that I use at Exxon/Mobile gas stations, which are prominent in my area. Touching it to the reader actually helps, I've found. It's annoying when it doesn't pick it up right away and you're standing there waving it like a fool trying to get it to activate 😛 They also enabled it for use as a credit card when buying snacks inside; it's pretty handy if you want to grab a drink and chips or gum or whatever...just swipe your SpeedPass at the register and you're good to go. Still, it's a minor convenience thing...it saves you all of 15 seconds from having to pull out your card, swipe it, and sign. Meh.

If something makes my life easier hell yeah would I get a tag like that. Instant checkouts, no stupid passport controls - just walk through, no need to carry anything with you when you go anywhere (vacation, other countires, etc.)

Yeah I don't think the government conspiracy thing is a valid excuse. Just look at McDonalds - there are over 31,000 McDonalds operated worldwide by more than 1.5 million people (stolen from their FAQ page). Let's say the government wanted to keep track of all the people who visit McDonalds. Assuming there are an average of 3 doors per restaurant (2 customer and 1 employee), that's roughly 93,000 RFID reader systems they'd have to install. Plus computer processing systems, local networks, and Internet network systems. Plus an enormous central database, or multiple multi-global databases. And there's the chance that not everyone has one, that the tag won't get read because it's blocked by something, etc. The logistics is just too much because you wouldn't just have to apply it to McDonalds, you'd have to apply it everywhere. I don't foresee it happening on either a national or a global scale.

I think a watch would be a good place to put it - you usually have it on you and you can get within range of a reader easily with it. Plus you could take it off when you are washing your car so that it doesn't keep starting up 😛
