I just replaced my 3com with a Lynksis 10/100 and it came with the WOL cable (this is the first time I have bought a retail card). But that left me wondering, "Why would anyone need this?" So I would like to hear from people who actually use this function. If you don't actually use this option, then just read the other people's replies.

I use it in a print server at work.. the computer can doze most of the time, and will wake up by the event. You'll be able to conserve energy 🙂

basically wake on LAN is most useful for remote controlled boxes. not much use if you are using the computer directly.

Hardware and OS are likely factors, too. When I played with WOL, a few years ago, not all functions (modem and DUN, for example, I recall) would wake up.
