is it posible for me and my friend to network our pcs together over a wan, but i would like it to show up as drives. is this posible and if it is can you help me do so? the computers are on 2 diferent ips and 2 diferent routers.

you could share you're entire c:/ drive, and then just map the network drive on the computer and assign it to a drive letter, like the f:/ drive

well what about my friend he is in his house how would we map the drive for him? i would have to use and ip and i am behind a router what would i do then?

we are both on XP and he lives down the street from me. if you needed to know that. but we have to link through ips and we both have routers.

Ignore Rallispec, his method only works on a LAN, or WAN on a private (leased)line, if you want to go through isp's the situation is totally different. The only ways I can think of would be to either get your isp administrator to have your two address linked as a virtual lan though his network(he probably won't or doesn't know how too but it can't hurt to ask), or virtual private networking(VPN). I've only seen VPN connections used for connecting to database servers so I'm not 100% sure this is what your looking for. If you have local phone connections(assumes you both have modems) you can simply purchase 2 copy's of pc-anywhere and dial in to each others computers for direct file sharing/trouble shooting, albeit slowly. This works long distances too, but you have to pay the phone company long distance charges. If he lives in a line of sight with your house you might also be able to creat a bridged link with wirless(rubber ducki) equipment, and create your own MAN(metropolitan area network). OS doesn't really matter but since both of you XP(pro I assume) you can create a VPN rather painlessly(XP home is stripped of this functionallity without 3rd party software). This was a little winded but I wanted to show all the possible options and help as much as possible.

ok thanks for your help, i think we might do the wireless one because he lives 3 houses down but accoss the street. thanks for your help.

you could also open up the applicable ports on your routers for file sharing (so that each pc is visible on the public internet) and then map the drives as described above. be careful though, you're exposing your pc to the world when you do this, so take appropriate precautions....

would there be a way i could password protect the drive? and how would i go about setting up a drive from a wan?
