i'd like to sign up for a credit union but don't you have to know someone or be in some sort of organization?

Most CUs (in my area) were once dedicated to certain business or groups but now have geographic limitations only (usualy big areas too). There are few organizations left that are big enough to support a bank by themselves. Even though CUs aren't strictly out for profit they need customers to stay afloat.

Chrono, have you not heard the ads on the radio for credit unions? Check out creditunionswork.org :)

Anyone can get an account at a credit union. I have been considering it, someone was telling me they get cheaper interest rates on loans. No overdraft fees and loads of other perks.

I may need to look into this.
