wAlt-Tab out of Quake

When I am playing Quake3 Arena under Windows 2000, how do I get back to the desktop? Under 98 I could alt-tab over to the desktop. I tried to ctrl-alt-del to the task manager, but no go. My problem is that sometimes during Quake I am getting some error and I hear the "bing" but I cannot figure out what's going on.
