Rush Limbaugh: The American flag is next

FARRAKHAN: 'WE NEED TO PUT THE AMERICAN FLAG DOWN'

New Orleans mayor says time to tear down statue of Robert E. Lee...
Group demands removal of confederate site in Orlando...

Hatred and divisiveness. That is the Democrat party today. Instead of unity behind absolute condemnation of the Charleston killer, you target fellow Americans. You take an excuse to attack innocent Americans. You betray the peace so many have sought.

You have really gone off the deep end haven't you... I used to read your posts and though I disagreed with most of them, respected your opinion. You seem to be driven by pure emotion now. Became what you hate? You really seem to be in need to a 12 step group...

Something tells me that all this push to remove/restrict the sale of the flag is backfiring and more people are purchasing/displaying the flag as I'm noticing more cars and trucks displaying the flag in the past few days. Many appear to be new/freshly painted as well. I saw 2 semi trucks this morning with Confederate flags on their front grill. I'll bet that more than normal will be seen at Nascar events from here on out.

I'm a Yankee born and raised. I don't understand the obsession or hatred of this flag.

Up here, its the universal sign for "I'm a racist". I like that these people have a way to identify themselves. If I see someone wearing a confederate flag, I know not to use big words around them. Same if I see this flag on a car or truck. I know to assume they are morons and will do something dumb. I'm usually right.

How on earth will censoring this flag help defeat racism? Does this flag create racism? Does this flag promote racism? Is this yet another attempt at hiding the problem instead of dealing with the problem?

Again I rely on you guys to inform me on such matters. I'm not privileged enough to live in a world with hate and ignorance.

The whitewashing, brushing the dust under the carpet of the USA continues.

Amazon is now banning the flag, which not only means the flag is gone, but books that have the flag on the cover are going to be pulled.

The puritanical left is coming out in full force, working to suppress thought and expression, and while companies have a right to do this, they are only responding to the pressures of the left.

Freedom loving left, that wants to censors america.

Nobody wants to prevent anyone from displaying the flag, so good news, you don't have to worry about it!

As for companies deciding not to sell certain merchandise, well, they do that every day.

I could not possibly care less if a company sells this flag or not. Its just not possible.

My question was more about the flag in general. I really do not understand the hatred and obsession with it. I don't understand why so many people want to censor it and why so many people are upset that others want to censor it.

What good is censoring it going to do? Just for shits and giggles I just searched Walmart and Amazon for "KKK". Both sites turned up images of burning crosses and people in white hoods. So the KKK is cool but not a group of states that got their asses kicked 150 years ago?

I don't get it.

They don't want to ban the flag. They want their government that is supposed to represent them to cease displaying the flag on State property.

As for merchants. They are telling merchants they will stop supporting them if they continue to sell those items. Isn't that what the right tells everyone should happen if a business does something like, say, discriminate against gays etc...?

The businesses are free to do as they choose. Some of the big ones have decided it's not worth it.

They are free.

The people pushing for this cenorship need to reexamine their line of thinking. How far are they willing to push for this censorship?

Might as well have a book burning down at the local DNC center, burn all the books the left dont like.

Louis Farrakhan calls for American flag to come down: ‘Who are we fighting today?’

“I don’t know what the hell the fight is about over the Confederate flag! We need to put the American flag down because we’ve caught as much hell under that as the Confederate flag!” the Nation of Islam leader said, a local radio station, WMAL, reported. “Who are we fighting today? It’s the people that carry the American flag. What flag do the police have? What flag flies over the non-Justice Department? What flag flies over the White House?”
You don't have to agree with, or even like, Minister Farrakhan. But if you look at history, you'll see that his argument is not without merit...

US Presidents that were Slaveholders
... more than one in four U.S. presidents were slaveholders: 12 owned slaves at some point in their lives. Significantly, 8 presidents owned slaves while living in the Executive Mansion. Put another way, for 50 of the first 60 years of the new republic, the president was a slaveholder.

Following is the number of slaves each of the 12 slaveholding presidents owned. (CAPS indicate the president owned slaves while serving as the chief executive):

- GEORGE WASHINGTON (between 250-350 slaves)
- THOMAS JEFFERSON (about 200)
- JAMES MADISON (more than 100)
- JAMES MONROE (about 75)
- ANDREW JACKSON (fewer than 200)
- Martin Van Buren (one)
- William Henry Harrison (eleven)
- JOHN TYLER (about 70)
- JAMES POLK (about 25)
- ZACHARY TAYLOR (fewer than 150)
- Andrew Johnson (probably eight)
- Ulysses S. Grant (probably five)

It’s a commonplace that Abraham Lincoln never trafficked in slaves, much less owned them – indeed, he “freed the slaves.” But here’s the shocker: Although the slave trade had been abolished in the District of Columbia in 1850, slaves inhabited the capital for another 15 years – till the end of the Civil War. Dwell on that thought: Lincoln fought the Civil War in a slave city – the Great Emancipator inhabited a White House staffed by slaves.

Are you from the south? Can you explain the obsession (good or bad) with this flag?

I don't get it.

People generally don't want to censor it, they just condemn the people who fly it, and rightfully so.

It's a symbol of racism and oppression. People don't like racism or oppression.

Forget it man, it's really not worth the energy or time to try to explain this simple fact to those who see it as an attack on their 'heritage'

I don't know about up North, but down South it is not the universal sign for racist. Other wise there would not be a discussion about it nor would it have remained up for all these years. Unless you truly believe a large chunk of the South is racist. Which I have found to not be true based on my personal experience.

But for now lets say most who bear it are racist. You omit to prejudice against the minority that do fly it for another reason other than racism? Prejudice against a minority view point is usually frowned upon.

Your questions:
No it will not defeat racism. It is a flag and can create meaning differently feelings one of which could trigger racism. It can be used to promote racism among other things. This is mostly a PC move. It doesn't get to the root of the problem, but I don't know what will. My gut tells me waiting more time for the older generations to die off will help minimize the problem, but racism will probably exist until the end of time to some extend. Humans tend to categorize things to better understand them. Unfortunately when applied to other humans it can lead to prejudice, racism, discrimination, and segregation.

Would the flag issue be national news if the murder was never seen with a rebel flag? I don't think it would. Have any of the victims asked for the flag to come down? I feel sure they support it and I don't blame them as it is a constant reminder of their lose, but I have not heard if they vocally called out for it after the attack.
