Yep..

I wonder if people really realize what they're getting themselves into when they go for it?

I mean, it should work for general functionality, email, web.. but I bet there have been quite a few disappointed peeps when they go out and buy a Windows game or other piece of software and it doesen't work.. lol

I was about to post this as well and that is exactly what my first thought was.

How many Walmart computer buyers have even heard of linux ?
It seems to me like they will be getting a lot of complaints from people wondering why all their old games won't work.

Those are some really nice prices though.

And Sun has done a really nice job tweaking the GUI.

This is FANTASTIC. It gives SUN a good boost in sales, brings *nix more into the mainstream which will bring about mroe development for *nix OS's. And it brings cheap PC's to the consumer market which wont be infected by every little script kiddie worm and virus out there.
This is win win win the whole way around.

Seems like I remember seeing that, too. Maybe it never really happened, though.

Yeah, that is very true..

I just hope, for their sake, that the computers are rock solid, and I hope they include documentation that explains what an operating system is and why Windows and Linux are different, not to mention that software for the two OSes aren't compatible.

If it is well executed, it could be exactly as you say. If it isn't, it will be a nightmare.

Agreed. One big step to accomplish this is the fact that per the article these machines are only availble from thier website. you cant walk into the store, grab one and walk out.

Ahhhh. So that changes the dynamic quite a bit... requires that you can at least somewhat operate a computer already. ;)

I'm not really sure if thats a good thing, or not. If people that can barely use Windows get into it, they might be totally confused.. lol

But yeah, it all depends on their execution of it. I agree though, overall.. it should be good for Linux.. unless the computer is a POS that clogs with dust and starts crashing after 6 months.

Thank God we don't have to deal with "mysterious" problems like that. ;)

Yeah, but if more people start using linux, it will finally become an attractive target for virus writers.

Linux v. Windows doesn't matter for a Wal*Mart system. Those computers lack true 3d acceleration (Most are i8xx integrated graphics, which is a derrivative of i740), making them incapable of running almost all commercial games these days. Heck, my $10 pool game (Friday Night 3d Pool) recommends a GeForce2 GTS or better!

Yeah but aren't all the virus writers just out to screw Microsoft? It seems like they would be happy that their OS is becoming more mainstream.

Edit: OOPs meant to quote Shanti.

JDS (Java Desktop System) is an excellent OS. I've been running it for several months now and was beta testing it too. Very stable and easy to use. The only drawback is that there isn't any wireless drivers for my wifi card in my lappie, that's a problem since Broadcom won't port it to Linux. :(
