Walmart to be distributor and vaccination center for H1N1 vaccine ?

I had to look and see if it was April 1st. Walmart is in talks with the fed to allow them to distribute the vaccine since they already have a massive distribution network. The stores are everywhere and they could give the vaccinations at the selected stores.

Not sure I feel right going to walmart to get vaccinated.

ORLANDO, Florida - Wal-Mart is discussing with U.S. health officials the possibility of putting vaccination sites at some of its stores for an H1N1 swine flu inoculation campaign this fall, a company official said on Thursday.

Federal officials met with Wal-Mart executives on Wednesday in Arkansas to discuss the issue, said Dr. John Agwunobi, president of health and wellness for Wal-Mart U.S., addressing public health leaders at a conference in Orlando, Fla.

"We are in discussions with CDC (U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and others in local and state departments to see what role we might play," Agwunobi said. "It might be we are a site. It may be help with logistics and with supply chain."

About 140 million people walk through the doors of its 4,000 U.S. stores each week, Agwunobi said.

U.S. health advisers have said about half the U.S. population should be vaccinated against H1N1 influenza. Up to 160 million doses of flu vaccine will be available for the start of the campaign in mid-October.

The H1N1 swine flu, characterized by mild symptoms in most patients, is now so widespread that the World Health Organization has stopped counting cases.

Speaking at the National Association of County and City Health Officials annual conference, Agwunobi also said Wal-Mart is planning to be a site this fall for seasonal flu vaccinations, administered by a third-party, at stores in most parts of the country.

Crap! Does this mean that the vaccines will be made in China by the vendor willing to make them for the cheapest price, cutting corners in quality in order to provide those prices?
We're all dooooooomed!

Why would anybody have a problem with this? They have probably the best distribution system in the world, why not use the best to...you know...DISTRIBUTE something.

Think about the reach they have in rural areas.

As long as it stays with just distribution.
These things have a way of growing out of control. I just don't want to see walmart medical clinics in the future. Walmart is definitely not doing it with the idea of "we just wanted to help"

They sell drugs, eyeglasses, etc. what is the problem. I doubt the cashiers will be giving the shots.

Yep, they already have pharmacies with <gasp> pharmacists working there.

You're not going to find a company with a better large scale supply chain distribution and logistics...that's for sure.

Stores like CVS already have pharmacies with 'Minute Clinics' inside them where they give vaccinations and health screenings.

Will I need to be vaccinated? 25 y/o otherwise healthy male.

Children, Elderly, and Health Care Workers are the ones that definitely need to be vaccinated first.

This isn't just because of H1N1 either. This is every flu season.

Why not? Many other necessity stores are doing exactly that like grocery stores, pharmacies, etc.

Because walmart has a habit of destroying businesses that provide quality service, replacing it with the lowest bidder possible.

I'm sure modelworks is happy with this...it's not evil walmart running them.

"Please note: Each medical clinic located in a Walmart store is owned and operated by an independent company that is unaffiliated with Walmart. Walmart does not employ any health care professionals or exercise any control over the provision of health care services at the clinics."

So basically this sounds like super win. Use their distribution system and the instore clinics to administer. This results in easy access to the vaccine for cheap. WIN/WIN.

That isn't the sort of clinic I am referring to.
I'm referring to full service clinics, not just ones that do check ups.

Where does anything in the article you link to imply that Wal-Mart would be moving to full service clinics? As already mentioned, they have the 'minute clinic' as does CVS and other chains and they already perform vaccinations.

Well, if you want to target the lowest common denominator of middle America, WalMart is definitely the place to be.

I think you mean if you want to reach the greatest percentage of the population the fastest and as little cost as possible. I see this as a complete win/win for everybody involved.

Better than the vaccinations being distributed through Costco, you'd have to get 24 shots but then you would be set for life.

Just going by their action of the past.

That spoils the fun of the whole thing.

Seems to me that would make it easier for the disease to spread making everyone congregate in a large building...

One person sneezes and viola! Everyone's screwed!

Last place you want to go in a pandemic is Wal Mart IMO too lol...

This isn't just because of H1N1 either. This is every flu season.

So far the majority of deaths from Swine Flu have been in the 7-34 age group. Speculation is that these healthier individuals have more robust immune systems that try harder to fight the virus. The fatal pneumonia-like respiratory failure is thought to be a by-product of this antibody battle.

Ironically people with weaker immune systems are not at greater risk of death, as is the case with normal human strains of influenza. Since weaker immune systems don't produce as many antibodies to fight the A/H1N1 Swine Flu virus their bodies don't act as aggressively when combating the virus
