Walmart refuses to sell alcohol to Iowa dad shopping with teen daughter

According to The Des Moines Register, Jim Davis was trying to buy two six packs of Budweiser and some Smirnoff for his wife.

But when the 57-year-old reached the checkout counter at the Walmart Supercenter in Ames, Iowa, with $80 in groceries and the alcohol, the cashier asked his 15-year-old daughter to see her ID – instead of his.

Because the teen had no ID, the employee refused to sell the alcohol to Davis.

The store has had a policy since 2003 requiring ID from all customers who appear under the age of 40.

Walmart is testing point-of-sale age checks in some locations across the country,” the customer service statement read. “By testing this, we hope to discover the best methods for ensuring that products are not sold illegally to minors.

In addition, to comply with federal laws, stores may ask for the ID from individuals within a group other than the person making the purchase.”

I was taken aback having to show ID for Vinegar now people won't even be able to show their ID if they look less than 40.
I'll show my ID where ever I want and to who (whom) I want. Toddlers and geriatrics alike. Just let the popo stop me for speeding.:colbert:

And, WTH, I was carded at the grocery store just the other day. Maybe I look under 40. Winning, right?

Edit: You took back what?

After reading the Des Moines Register article I have a feeling that that Walmart clerk got fired.

Whatever Walmart's reasoning, I'll bet they've temporarily lost sales of more than just alcohol and more than a few permanent customers over their little experiment.

I think you're giving their customers a little more credit than they're due.

Come on this is simply someone who was trained incorrectly. This is not news.
Years ago a kid in a grocery store refused to sell me margarita mix on Sunday because back then alcohol sales were banned on Sunday. I remember he held firm when I pointed out that there was not liquor in the mix.

In Tennessee everyone gets carded.... of course we still have a large number of dry counties. It is not just walmart that makes everyone at the checkout show ID... a lot of other companies do the same. I guess they don't realize that if some old fart is buying beer for a young teen that the teens would probably stay in the car and not be on CCTV.

They don't even allow the sale of alcohol in walmart in maryland if you want to play the pussification of america card. The democratic states are winning... so to speak.

So why didn't the father ask for the manager? It should have been fairly simple. Cashier we cannot sell you that alcohol because somebody that is with you is under 21. Ok that is fine can you please request the manager so I can discuss this policy with them. Let me move out of the way so you can get to the people behind me while we wait.

im amazed every-time i am reminded that there are still dry counties in this country.

You can't even sample Jack Daniels at the distillery since it is located in a dry county. Yes it is silly... however... Tennessee does have the best moonshine in the nation.

I don't mind being carded for alcohol, but carded for cigarettes is beyond stupid. The policy is the same, if you look under 40 they card you. Well fuck you only have to be 18 FFS! Maybe make is so that if you look under 30 at least? Dumb assess! It's usually woman that card me the most.

NYC raises smoking age to 21, sets cigarette pack minimum price at $10.50

NEW YORK Mayor Michael Bloomberg signed landmark legislation Tuesday banning the sale of tobacco products to anyone under the age of 21

Bloomberg, who was a former smoker, also signed legislation on Tuesday that will seek to keep the price of tobacco high by prohibiting coupons and other discounts and setting a minimum cigarette price of $10.50 per pack.

lol, I remember when I was ~14 my dad bought a case of beer for us to share, and the cashier (a slightly gothy girl probably aged ~20) was like "So who is this really for? winkwink" and my dad was like "Haha, got us" and we went on our way. loliowa.
